Default Millersburg, Pa

Can anyone tell me the positives/negatives about Millersburg, Pa ? My wife and I are considering moving there-what's the economy like-jobs-cost of living, etc. Thanks so much.

Default Close to Harrisburg

Millersburg is nice and quiet, though slightly depresed. You will probably still see a horse and buggy here and there. I lived there ages ago, but I visited recently and everything was pretty much the same. It's close to work (30 minutes or so) in Harrisburg.

If you visit, check out the french fry guy on the corner in downtown! Awesome fries with lots of white vinegar - don't get much better than that!!!!!!! (I craved them something awful when I was pregnant and 600 miles away in NC)

it is about a 30 - 45 minute ride to harrisburg. it has a neat little ferry that crosses the susquehanna river in the summer when the weather is good. that's the towns main draw. it also has a nice square and the famous millersburg hotel. they have a few independent shops and a Weis and Walmart. most of hte area is velleys with some Amish and farmers. almost all of the people commute to harrisburg or sunbury. it is very beautiful nestled in the mountains and against the river. there can be snow in the winter and that's a pain to deal with if youre going over the mountain. homes used t oalways be cheaper in that part (northern dauphin county) but have really gone up in the past 5 or 10 years.

A little late but....

Millersburg seems to be the ultimate bedroom community. Most people seem to leave for work at 5:00 in the morning getting home late. It is a nice quiet town, and the people are friendly on the surface, but having lived for over 4 years I've discovered that if you didn't grow up the valley, attend public school here, or have established family here, you don't really get to know anybody.... friendships are set and have been in place for decades, even at local churches... at least the two I attended for awhile.

You also find you miss basic services.. we just got a Walmart 2 years ago and a Burger King last year. If Walmart doesn't carry it, you've got a drive a head of you down to harrisburg or up to Sunbury to buy it... best to pick it up on your way home from work. It seems tough to get someone from town to do work for you (Plumber, General Contractor, Electrical). You find you have to get someone from Harrisburg to come up to work... if the local contractor doesn't know you already, etc. I guess it fall under that friends/family thing I mentioned above.

There is an EXCELLENT Italian dinner that I highly recommend out Route 25 in Berrysburg. There is also an old fashioned Drive-in Movie a little further up that road in Gratz's that's fun to take the family to. Most people sit outside their car in lawn chairs and watch the movie with a radio to listen to the sound. Not much else except for their occasional festivals and the Ferry when it's working.

The Williams French Fries mentioned above are good, but very expensive... we don't get them too often, just at Millersburg Football Games on cold nights.

The Millersburg School System is rated the highest in the Daulphin County Area.

Overall, it's been an okay experience. I would say though maybe look down in Halifax where the people seem a bit friendlier... most of the people I know since moving here are from there.

Here's a really neat newer facility in Millersburg Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art - seems like something you'd expect in a larger or a college town.

You might get a fight from partisans of Derry Township or Lower Dauphin if you say Millersburg has the highest rated schools in Dauphin County though.

Ned Smith Center events seems really expensive for the area and being a large family out of our price range @ $20.00 to $40.00 a head. We love Lake Tobias though!

As for the school... that's the State of Pa's overall academic ranking, not mine. That's why we pick Millersburg originally... for the kids. It seems a good school system and I won't knock the others.
