Security of PSU jobs?
My husband is thinking of pursuing an engineering position with PSU (State College location), and I was wondering what people had to say about the security of a position with PSU. Once hired, if you turn out to be a good employee and everyone is happy, do you need to worry about your job being yanked out? Funding gone? We live in an area now where some jobs, while they pay well, are very precarious and not something to count on for the future. Or, you could get a "government" job where you can have the job for life, so to speak, if you want it, and folks are rarely fired and can count on a large amount of job security. My husband isn't a job hopper and is looking for a permanent, long term career position, in a town where we can put down roots and stay for life. Would you say that an engineering job with PSU would fit that? Or is it risky and we're setting ourselves up for a fall later on?
Thanks!

Penn State is the largest employer in Centre County, and the reason why State College has one of the lowest unemployments in the state. That being said, once you have the job at PSU, you are pretty much set from what I know. I hope your husband pursues this job, and if so, enjoy all State College has to offer!

A PSU job is about as secure as you can possibly get.

How would you honestly expect anyone to know that for sure?
It's 2009. No ones career is set in stone.

Most short term jobs are advertised as such. In general, PSU has many applications for open positions so they can afford to be choosy (sp). Assuming they hire the right person, your employment is pretty secure. Just like anyone else, they reserve the right to terminate an employee for just cause.
With that being said, my experience is that there are many long term empoyees at PSU.
