By the way, Lewistown is in central PA and there is a very large Amish community in Mifflin County. I wouldn't live in Bellefonte and yes I have been there many times as well.
Thanks for your response. I'm happy to know that you do live in the area. I also agree with you that Lewistown is a great place to live. I was born there and think it is a great small town with friendly people. I'm also glad to know you like State College.

After reading the entire thread, I must say that for renting a place it may not make much difference where you live; but, if you decide to purchase property then places like Lewistown become much much more attractive in terms of price and taxes. I have commuted from adjacent counties to State College for nearly 20 years for this reason and currently reside in Lewistown.

Are there anything wrong with these areas (depressed, high crime rate??) or are they quaint small towns. I have heard bad things about the Lewistown Narrows. Is anything being done to make the road safer? If I decide to stay in State College or closer what would be some reasonable rent places 1 or 2br ($400-600 per month). How is Bellefonte? Toftrees? Milroy? I get some information but not very much about the area. Any info. would be helpful.
I read all the threads and nobody mentioned the activity in the Lewistown Narrows. There is current construction to transform into a limited access 4 lane highway that is to be completed in 2008. If you lived in Lewistown and worked in State College you need not even travel the narrows though.

Well you are talking 25 min drive and here in maryland thats nothing at all.. live in anyplace that is 30 miles from school or work and is cheap.. 30 min is a short drive to the rest of the country...the snow is bad in the winter but since global warming has kicked in pretty good.. its not to bad to drive over the mountain anymore..in the 80s it was closed a few times a year..so realy if you can live cheap in lewistown its worth it.. I just wouldnt brag about it or raise kids there lol..

I have recently graduated from Indian Valley High School, so here is some input on Lewistown from someone who has grown up here in what people call Lewistown's "bad times." I live closer to Burnham on the outskirts of Lewistown. Heroin problems? Never once in my life have I ever encountered heroin. If you're not a regular illegal drug user, you'll likely never come in contact with heroin or any other illegal drugs. Crime? I've never been a victim of any crimes at all while living here. The only way I can imagine being a victim is by being an idiot walking around in the middle of town late at night. I'm sure people are smart enough not to be out late at night anyways. Lewistown was a nice place to grow up. There isn't much for teenagers to do in town itself, but State College is nearby and has lots of things to do.

Good for you, there will always be whiners and faultfinders wherever you go. I feel bad for them, they complain and do nothing to help the situation they complain about. An area improves when this type leaves and takes it elsewhere!

Be positive and look for the best in people, God bless!

My husband has taken a job in Milroy, PA. We are looking for a house in this area. It was good reading all of your posts.
