Higher, colder, and (hard to believe, yes I know

) snowier than areas to the east and south in PA due to its location atop the Allegheny Front, a belt of high country that crosses PA. This "snow belt" on I-80 extends from Snow Shoe west to about DuBois. Nearest shopping more than a fly-specked style grocery store would be in State College, which is where the only couple of people I met from there worked. PA 144 from Snow Shoe north to Renovo (reh-NOH-vuh) has the reputation of the loneliest road in PA - about 20 miles of that road doesn't even have a hunting camp much less a house. Once you get out of the couple of miles of old strip mines that surround Snow Shoe borough proper, you're in the big woods.
