Nw pa...
How come there is no forums on the NW part of PA??? I am sure it would be useful to have... To many people move to the area that shouldn't and wouldn't if they could ask questions and get real answers

Now why would you want to start that subject here... No I mean Normal People.. They think is has the same to offer as the Cities do... And Yes, we are starting to get Illegal's too... But I really don't think a forum would stop that... Only thing that will is if poeple stop giving them work and don't use the business's that hire them...

Well, the powers that be decided Harrisburg-Lancaster-York didn't deserve its own forum. Seems kinda strange since that seems to drive traffic and hit count to the site - the NEPA forum seems more active than the general PA forum that throws York and Erie together.
I'm curious on the meaning of people who "shouldn't" move to the area, though. (Or "the area," one Federal agency I'm aware of includes Union County in northwest PA.)

He probably means people that don't realize that the area is generally pretty rural, that folks don't want nor can they afford the latest "in" cuisine, that the area has a shortage of jobs and wages are lower and they don't like people coming in and telling them that they're inbred, ignorant and right wing nut jobs. All the while insisting that businesses, lifestyle and everything was way better where they came from.

We moved to Erie from a large city for my spouse's job. Be very wary of the "old boys club" and older women who believe an Indian man with a beautiful wife would ever wish to "fondle" their "knees" instead of his lovely wife!! They ruin reputations here if you happen to be an articulate, educated minority. While there are universities here, the students are from elsewhere. This would be where one would see any interlacing of ethinicity and open-mindedness. There are some transplants who are indeed open-minded, but far and few between. UPMC has now moved it's arms into this area, and their agenda seems to be catering to the white community, combined with letting go of some of their most experienced nurses and physicians, particularly if such are of minority status.
The lake and Presque Isle are absolutely stunning in July/August. There is no "summer" in June. Water sports, fishing, etc. are abundant, with bike trails and many endangered species on peninsula. This peninsual is indeed a jewel. There are some small galleries and artsy communities, but again, very little intertwining of thought with minorities. Sunsets on the lake are some of the most beautiful in the world during the two warm months.
The winters are near intolerable, with over 145 inches this past winter and gale-force winds, sustained 70 mph and more. Eighteen inches of snow overnight in November is not a surprise. The white "old money" doesn't interact with minorities, it seems.
The area has its share of the "redneck" mentality as well. Also, clairfy between "illegal" and "foreign." Some people here are not tolerant of those from other countries, and utilize the verbage "foreign" in disrespect.
If you are white and catholic, you will have no problems fitting in. If you are not and are a minority, for the most part, if you 'step out of your place,' watch for retaliation from the big white fish in this tiny pond.
It's worth a day trip from Pittsburgh, however, living in Erie year round is very, very harsh weather. If you are professional minority, know that your place is not with the "white boy network," and I have seen many come and go.
It's a toss-up. The airport is small. Some choose to stay "hooked" into a larger city, such as Cleveland, Buffalo or Pittsburgh. There seems to be an abundance of teen pregnancies among the local population.
There are some nice places to eat, an Indian Restaurant, Chinese, etc. Some of the others are extremely over-priced and the patrons a bit pretentious (can we say old money?)
It's a toss-up; not very friendly to those with an accent, but does offer a lot to do outdoors during the short but gorgeous summer.
However, after seven years, we are moving because we prefer a more diverse social interaction.

Thanks North Beach Person, Thats pretty much what I meant.. It is rural in almost all areas compared to other parts of the state... But we that live there like it that way... And You hit it on the head, Irratates the Hell out of me when people talk about how nice it was where they moved from.. I tell them, move back then...
Ciaron1985, Get off the Professional Minority Gig... If you were that professional you wouldn't need that as a Cruch!!! I visit Erie a lot during July, Aug. and Sept... Launch out of Walnut, Also have a Friend married to a minority that lives in Erie... Never heard him or her complain about anything your speaking of... Maybe your looking for it and finding it...

You're welcome Dblea. I'm also from that area and now live in an area that was much like it and I've seen the pretentious transplant mentality both there and here. People come and complain about all the things they miss and how much better it is back where they came from. If that's the case then why did you move? I prefer people that know coffee is just coffee, not some special drink you buy at a "shoppe."

I know exactly what your saying North Beach... I lived away for over 20 years, Finally moved back 4 years ago... Missed it while I was away... Happy to be Back!!! And the Coffee comment was Great... I am in Foca, Turkey right now... they do not drink FIlter Coffee, just instant!!! I always have everyone that comes bring some from the states when they come...
If a few poeple actually seen how other contries are they would really appriciate the US a lot more and stop bitching and trying to change what the country was based on and make the Changes to put it back like it was...

I'm originally from Erie, and have legislated for a NW PA forum too. The cry babies on here that argue about not having a Harrisburg forum get ridiculous; there is at least representation of their general area in the other forums. There is no representation of NW PA whatsoever.
To the comments about Erie: I agree with a lot of them. There is a very unaccepting culture in Erie. Although the city continues to grow as a haven for refugees from far away countries, it is still very unaccepting. People cry about no work, but do everything they can to complain about new businesses coming to town.
The snow? It's just a fact of life. No sense in complaining about it.

I believe it has a lot to do with how you present yourself to people in NW Pa. After I moved back (From Mississippi) after over 16 years in the south, I did form a Southern Accent.... Was never treated poorly... But then again I may not be Smart enough to know when I am!!!
Snow keeps the Bugs in Check!!! and makes it so much easier to see that Deer!!!
