I have a picture that I took (I can't remember exactly where, but I think it was somewhere close to Towanda) of some evergreens on the side of a hill spelling out 1948. I would love to know if they are still there.

Wow..thanks for the memory! I recall the huge, impressive red/white checked radar 'screen' at Red Rock AFB sweeping to detect whatever...I loved going out that way (I was a kid) to see that sight!
As to the evergreens that spelled out '1948'. I'm dumbfounded...new one on me...but I swear that I saw some that said '2006' last year along Rte. 118......lol.....
More seriously, that Lopez area is remote...and Dushore, as well. I have had the chilling experience of swimming in the creek at World's End State Park, visiting lovely Eagle's Mere with its summer playhouse, as well as Lakes Jean and Ganoga (private) way up high on Red Rock Mountain......

I remember when I lived in Lopez, I was one of 3 families (so I was told) who had running water in the house. We had a spring house in our back yard with water piped into the house. There was a large spring at the edge of town where most carried water in containers or washed their cars etc. I was going on leave and my next door neighbor reminded me to be certain to lock my spring house or I would have no water when I returned. I forgot, and sure enough, my spring was empty. It took 3 or 4 days to fill back up. It was very cold in the winter, but I was 22 years old and "ready" for anything. Talk about memories!!!!!

^^ I'm surprised to learn that Lopez had three houses......heh. That's a good story and a reminder that the 'simple' life isn't all that far in the past. By the way, how did a hamelt in the wilds of Northern PA come to be called Lopez ?????All the region's German, English, Welsh and Indian names I get...but Lopez?
We usually spent some smmertime weekends at Sylvan Lake so as to swim, fish, sail & rowboat.....it was always a great small escape.....never as good as going to Ocean City NJ however...mecca for us children!. My only problem with the lake was the outhouse.....ugh...a two holer. That cottage belonged to my dad's closest cousins. We had much fun, great neighbors and the requisite at home July Fourth fireworks along the shore, until dad's cousin (tipsy from beers while doing the display) got a roman candle on the butt trying too hard to do it all...ouch.
We went on to lease another cottage with real bathrooms, thankfully, in subsequent ears..although it did have an optional outdoor well with a functioning pump handle...best water. And yes i recall going to mountain springs tapped along the roadsides to get that wonderful spring water (not chlorinated like the public supply).....ah. good times

Looking to buy in Benton for summer place
Hi Guys.
RR here.
I am 70 years of age but in good health and quite active.
I and my wife are looking to buy/rent in Benton for the summer months.
We have our full time house here in N Ft Myers,FL.
Hot,and wet, here in the summer.
We usually get out for atleast a month.
THIS year we stayed on 118 in a cabin near the antique barn.
Edna is from Dallas, and her relatives are from Meeker, so we are fairly familiar with that area.
So if you know of a place to rent in the Benton area, every summer, for maybe as much as $1000 month (depending on amenities, condition, of course), let me know please.
Failing that, I am going to buys something there. Maybe a trailer (Or modular home).
Before I do this, I would like to know something from people who live in the area.
Most of us are aware of the No Name Flood that hit that area in2006.
Did a LOT of damage.
Edna has a cousin who lives in Noxen, and she REALLY got hit hard.
But Benton got hit hard also.
And there was one before that, back in 72 I think.
After all Fishing Creek is always there........
My question is not about the 100 year floods, and of course no one knows when the next flood will hit,but what I would like to get a feel for is;
How OFTEN does, say Park Street, flood?
anybody got a handle on that?
I love Benton and eating at the Filling Station and going over to the Pelican for a bite now and then.

I remember stopping at a pretty nice market near Benton, it had a wood floor that looked to have once been a gym or basketball court(?) on the way to Ricketts Glenn. We'd drive the Mildred, Lopez, Dushore route to avoid the big climb at Red Rock. Yes, the falls there are awesome. We also walked down the road to Jamison City part way, is that a cabin community like at Ganoga Lake?

Jamison City, Elk Grove, Emmons and Central make up a pretty expansive area. Most homes are seasonal, however there are enough locals to keep several businesses going.
Lopez is a good size as well, a few streets, a few dozen homes, no businesses.
http://www.lopezpa.com]Lopez, PA On-Line (broken link)
It was named for John Lopez, an early pioneer whom was killed during the construction of the Susquehanna and Tioga Turnpike.
The spring outside of town is called Cold Springs. Even on the hottest day of the year, that water is ice cold.
Don't know of any tree's that spell out 1948. But I know of a 1976, that is on the hill just south of Dushore.

Having grown up in Sullivan County, I can answer the question on the trees... the trees actually spell out 1942. Since my mother was born in 1942, she claimed they were in her honor. They were really planted by a local Boy Scout troup for a community service project. They are located just north of New Albany on Route 220.
If you know what you are looking for, you can still make some of the numbers out. However, over time some of the trees have died or lost branches etc.

I keep up to date with the Benton News website for news info. But can't really see much.
Can anyone shed some light on this little town that we hope to move to some day?
Thanks and have a great summer and hope to meet some neighbors,

Benton was my childhood home town. My parents knew practically everyone in the area. Most are buried in St. Martha's cemeteries.
It was a great place to live and my brother and I roamed the fields and woods constantly. I'm 66, so it was a long time ago. The only complaint I ever heard was the narrow roads (be careful) and getting around in the snow. I'd return if I could.

Hi folks, just ran across the thread and I'm looking to move out toward Stillwater/Benton/Orangeville/etc area. I'm a professional writer and looking for a quiet rental for me and my two cats, non-smoker, non-drinker. A small cottage would be nice.
thanks for any ideas,
