We still go up to the air force base on top of Red Rock Mountain to pick blueberries like I did when I was a kid. Love all that area up there. We live in Mountaintop now and HATE it. Not a good town to retire in. My husband will retire in maybe 5 or 6 years. We are thinking of buying land in either Bradford, Tioga, or Potter county. Want 20 acres or more. Will buy the land now and move there when he retires.

Figured this would be a good place to post this instead of starting a new thread. Would anybody have easy directions to get to the one swimming hole by Rickett's Glenn that seems to be pretty popular? Can't recall exactly what it's called but I know there's rocks you can go in between and people sometimes jump off the rocks in the deep end. It's maybe a mile or two from the trails/waterfalls. I use to take kids there when hiking with work but tried to find it on my own a few years ago with no luck. Any help is greatly apprecitated!

Benton is nice and quiet with a low cost of living which should make for a peaceful retirement. There is a yearly carnival put on by the Orangeville Firemen and they have great homemade ice cream (Orangeville is right down the road from Benton).

There is also a smaller carnival in Benton itself and they have yearly rodeos intown.

Thought I'd throw this in here because there's not a lot of traffic on the subject.

There's a dirt road near Rickett's Glenn that does down the mountain to the east/ southeast to a place called the meadows. It was an old logging mill or camp with a small lake, I think. We drove down it one day. I remember stopping many times at a small grocery in Benton that had an old wood floor that looked like it was once a basketball court.(?)
We had some great times up there and I'd love to have land up there someday. Is that shoe factory still running in Lopez?

I went through Lopez a few years ago. I was at Ricketts Glen and took the truck/trailer route to Dushore, over to Mehoopany, Sugar Hollow Rd. over to 309, then back to Wilkes-Barre.

It seems that there's no longer a shoe factory in Lopez. The only businesses that I could find (internet search) were a photography studio and the Lopez Winery. Everything else I looked for, gas, auto repair, haircut, groceries, pointed to another town - Mildred, Colley, Laporte.

Mildred, Dushore, Lopez. Those were the towns you drove through if your car couldn't make it up the mountain to Rickett's Glenn. I might be wrong about which town had the shoe factory, I believe it would have been the biggest one. I think it had a rocket in a little park, sort of 4th of July red white and blue.

i was at the old radar air force base (its a job corps now) and it has alot of history. the old barracks (the dorms for the students) are getting tear down. i think it is a shame what they are doing to the buildings. i also was in the radar tower(the golf ball).

As to the evergreens that spelled out '1948'. I'm dumbfounded...new one on me...but I swear that I saw some that said '2006' last year along Rte. 118......lol.....

More seriously, that Lopez area is remote...and Dushore, as well. I have had the chilling experience of swimming in the creek at World's End State Park, visiting lovely Eagle's Mere with its summer playhouse, as well as Lakes Jean and Ganoga (private) way up high on Red Rock Mountain......
