Comparing New Castle's and Warren's Citizenry
Since I've decided to move back to PA, I have become obsessed with researching towns. I have narrowed it down so far (although still not counting others out completely) to Johnstown, Warren, (also Jamestown NY), Beaver Falls, DuBois, or New Castle. What, you may ask, do these places have in common? They are close to places I already know, have the very lowest costs of living, have old homes and downtowns (in various stages of repair, I'll admit), and have houses to rent (not just apartments).
However, there are many, many, very sour opinions of all those places (which, if you read enough on CD, you will see that a lot of people hate where they live and can't wait to get out) EXCEPT for New Castle. My question is: are people in New Castle that much more satisfied with where they live? are they nicer? do they just not have computers? I am interested in anyone's opinion on this question and also any first-hand knowledge of what these towns are like today (not when you grew up there 25 years ago). Also, I need to rent a house that takes cats and dogs, too, if you have a comment on that. Thanks so much!

I've been waiting for some news on New Castle, as well.
I hope someone gives replies.

I've always been fond of Warren PA, but there are few to no worthy employment opportunities. It's a fun town to pass through and maybe even stop a while on your way to Kinzua, but can't imagine living there at 39 years old.

Lawrence County seems to be the popular place lately. I know several couples from Pittsburgh (transplants from other states) who are looking for homes in that area or are already living there. You don't find the North Allegheny or Cranberry types there. They say it has a very down-to-earth and small town feel. People aren't so consumed with materialism which is one of the main reasons they wanted out of the Pittsburgh area school districts. Other comments they have about the school districts is that they are smaller, the kids aren't lost, lower property taxes, and the administration isn't out of control.
Warren is one of those great places to vacation but you wouldn't want to live there.
I have also considered the Johnstown area after driving through the area. I never realized how beautiful the countryside is in that area.

Thank you all for your opinions. PeterRabbit, those pictures were great--if anyone else looks, be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page that says "walking tour of the historic north hill."
I have renewed interest in New Castle...Now, I just have to start saving moving money! I've got to get out of here before next summer--too hot!
