I don't know how conservative Lancaster County is anymore; Obama won the county in the primary. The ignorant residents that I've encountered here have no religion but that doesn't stop them from making fun of mine, mainly because Catholics are a minority and it's easy to bash them since the Priest scandals. For those who have experienced racial and religious prejudice here take heart: alot these of people don't like anyone that's not EXACTLY like them. Based on what I've seen, especially lately, I'm proud that I'm not.

Sad to hear that. People can be mean at times. And on Obama , i would think he wins PA in the main election also.

Yes, some of the people in the county can be alittle standoffish, but don't let that be a factor in your decision. Like most towns in Lancaster County, it's conservative in nature, and that's a good thing. We have many activities here, from parades to the incredible Craft Show in August. The Community Center is one of the best in the county. Dawne mentioned Lititiz Park, which is very family friendly and well maintained. After leaving the park stop in to Wilbur's Chocolates, Greico's Ice Cream or Spill the Beans; you won't regret it! The shoppes downtown are diverse, clean with plenty of parking. There are a number of doctors, dentists, notaries, pharmacies, etc all within the city limits. Lancaster General Hospital has an annex in the southern end of town. Warwick Township has an excellent police department that works in conjuction with Lititz Borough police. You already know about Warwick Schools and their excellent reputation. Traveling can sometimes be difficult, but most of time access to the major highways is pretty easy.

Overall, Lititz is a safe, well-managed town. Feel free to send me a private message if you any particular questions that you think I could help you with.
My husband and I live in So. California and are looking for a place that has clean air and feels safe. Our children and grandchildren will likely follow. We are white and my biggest concern is- will my hispanic daughter-in-law and grandchildren feel excepted in Lititz, or is their really that much racism? Everything else I have read about Lititz sounds wonderful!

I know some minorities have mentioned that there is prejudice towards them here. Honestly, based on my own experience, your entire family will not be accepted because you're from out of town. Narrow-minded people with old school thoughts and believes.
My opinion of Lititz has obviously changed since last year.

No. I'm dark....not hispanic but everyone thinks I am anyway.. and I'm treated very oddly here. Everyone has an attitude and they constantly stare. If you tell them "hi" they will ignore you. Some people are ok, but if you talk to them you find out that they are not from here. If you have any type of an accent, they will act like they have no clue what you're saying. My friend was practically refused service at the local subway (she's indian). So no, generally, they do not treat minorities very nicely here.

I've also recently met a great family that's African-American that live in Lititz and have been treated poorly by their neighbors. The children have had no issues, although there was a few racial incidents at the high school this past year. Again, if you're not from the county originally you have little chance of being accepted by a large percentage of the residents here. They fear outsiders, no matter your race, religion, etc.

my mother in law lived in Lancaster...we had the marvelous opportunity to spend a lot of time all over the area....of course, then, it certainly wasn't built up as much, and certainly the crime wasn't there...it was a wondrous area, especially Litiz...we used to go to penicle point...matter of fact, got pictures somewhere, and the Amish were so nice...helpful and kind, I still love them and wish people would just leave them alone....it's a shame to read this....I'm going back over 20 years ago...

hugs

Yes, creme, it is a bloody shame to read about what an apparent suburbanized, sterile slum Lancaster County has now become.

It's fear of the unknown. "You're different from the rest of us so I KNOW you'll create havoc and disrupt our wonderful way of life". "Different" can be anything: skin color, speech, religion, etc.

wull, yes, you have to remember, the outskirts of Lancaster was at one time, nothing but Farm Land and Amish, and those who were born and raised their are being smothered by change, quick and ugly change...can't blame them for being angry...I wouldn't take it personal, it's just that when you grow up in a very small farm area, and see it turn into what it is now,,,,it's very sad for most of those people...plus, I tell you true...I cannot believe how rude people are to the Amish, especially when they're on the roads with their buggys. People honk and scream at them...? Sheesh, it's so so sad. Very sad....

Give it time...if you can...it is not that your different, they are simply having all their peace and quiet taken from them....not to mention, the crime in the city of Lancaster...it's such a shame.

Hugs
Creme
