I've only visited but I was astounded at the amount of air pollution. I also hear the schools aren't great either.

You're kidding, right? Unfortunately, I know you are not, so it has to be a case of self-delusion due to either just not wanting to believe that Reading is a FAR MORE dangerous city than NYC or Philadelphia. I'll give you Newark - the gang dominated "police free zones" are by far larger, but if you'd scale Reading to Newark 1:1, Reading would slaughter Newark and eat its metaphorical heart after having just bought, sold, and smoked its entire crack supply.

Ok!! I moved to Reading from NYC 5 years ago and I hear all these negative things about Reading!!. I was born and raised in NYC, so this means I know the bad and the good of the streets in NY. Now we compare it to Reading, Reading is so much better to raise your family. Matter of fact anything out of NYC is good to raise a family. We need to keep in consideration that ALL towns/city/states not only Reading, PA has its good and its bad parts. I have been to bad parts of Allentown, Bethlehem, Philadelphia, etc. You just have to know where you rent or buy your home. You have to know how to pick your surroundings for both yourself and your family. I have lived in the NE part of Reading and I consider it to be a decent place to live in. Now go to the south part or to what I call the more "rundown" area , yes there I will agree with those that consider Reading to be the worst place to live in. Reading is divided into sections. You just have to know how to pick the best part of the pie!!
