What kind of job do you need? What exactly about State College don't you like? What do you consider to be "cheap"? What do you mean by "drama"?

I can think many, many towns would fit your description. Not even sure where to start, it would be like throwing darts at map of the state and see the dart tip lands first.

I was just through the State College area and the little towns in Centre County seem almost idyllic. Thats just driving through, maybe I'd go stir crazy after a while. But State College is close by for some entertainment and the jobs. And all that scenic wilderness and outdoors and rural farmland. If it wasn't so far from where I live I'd give serious thought to getting a weekend place up there. What exactly don't you like about the area?

If you want less snow and more jobs then looking south and east of "Happy Valley" would be the ticket. Folks commute to Harrisburg area jobs from Newport, Liverpool, Halifax, Millersburg, Elizabethville, all with no drama there. (I would say Duncannon but the Appalachian Trail hikers might add some "drama" in June-July.)
