Moving to Hershey or Harrisburg (Middletown, Palmyra: crime, neighborhoods, schools)

Hi everyone,

I am considering taking a job in Hershey and I would like to know which areas are good to live in. I like the convenience of living close to shops, restaurants etc and was considering living in Harrisburg and commuting to Hershey. Are there any neighborhoods in Harrisburg that are safe and convenient? Also, which areas in Hershey wold you recommend? I am a single female and safety is also pretty high on my list of priorities.

I'm not going to be of much help to you, but we visited Philly last week to check out the areas we are considering moving to. When we left, we drove through Hershey & Harrisburg. Hershey was adorable! Harrisburg was nice, but you would definitely want to be careful of the neighborhoods based on what we saw. Best of luck to you! I think you will really like it there!!! (The air actually smells of chocolate).

I'd recommend looking in Hershey itself or nearby Hummelstown, Palmyra, or Middletown. All of those towns have what you described, the only question being whether they have them at the scale you want.

I will definitely look in Hershey too. Any particular reasons that I should avoid Harrisburg?

Parts of Harrisburg are pretty bad, and the parts of Harrisburg that would fit what you are looking for would be inconveniently located relative to commuting to Hershey. The biggest factor in not recommending Harrisburg in your case however is that you may be able to find what you want much closer to where you'll be working.

ho wlong is the commute? hershey is kind of quaint but pretty boring

I thought that the commute was only about 20 min. Some of the things that I would like to be close to are gyms/health clubs, cultural events and night life. I also travel quite a bit, so being closer to the airport and train station is a consideration.
Do you think that I can have all those things in Hershey?

You're not going to have pretty much any of that in Hershey. I think you want to look at Midtown Harrisburg, which has all that. The only thing is we do suffer from the typical city crime here such as car break-ins and the occaisonal mugging or burglary. If you have any type of street smarts you'll be fine.

People from the city always say that. Actually Hershey is great. I live only and hour away from it. Lots of build up going on there..such as stores and local convient stores. Also more and more job oppertunties. I know its spelled wrong. lol But really go for Hershey.

Not everyone is excited by chain stores, gas stations and farms.

Hershey DOES have a lot going for it, however. Great schools, growing economy and it's a perfect place to raise a family. But for singles? Not really. I think you are going to be depressed if you live anywhere but Harrisburg. There are no hip suburbs with any sort of singles scene, it's pretty much all family oriented outside of the downtown/midtown thing. That's not saying there aren't single people in the suburbs...they are just probably hanging out in the city at night and on the weekends.
