Sunbury has suffered what many towns of it size has with the mall/supermarket boom that started in the 1970s and wiped out Main Streets as well as the end of industry in many of these places. So far I have only met really nice people who care about the community and are committed to the place. Are there other sorts? Sure, Sellinsgrove has its own seedy part of town (and per capita more crime than Sunbury). Will it ever be what it was? NEVER. The same is true of Wilkes-Barre, Scranton and even bigger cities like Columbus, OH and Hartford, CT. They have bright spots and depressed spots. They are old in places and sagging and established families move away (then drive by and trash the places for being something different than they once were while forgetting the troubles that existed in the past).

If you decide to come to Sunbury, contact me at p2son@earthlink.net and I will give you a walking tour and introduce you to some wicked good fries.
Yes, you just moved to Sunbury but you seem to know more about it's history and current condition than folks who have been familiar with Sunbury for decades.

Therefore, you can expertly answer all questions and rebut any negative comments that are posted. I will not write another word.

What would I know? I've only lived in the area for 55 years.

The thread is all yours.

You better take a look as this before you give false info.

I'll take my chances in Selinsgrove.

Wow.It was just one persons opinion about a place they moved to.they seem to be happy there. Depends where someone has moved from.Maybe the OP was in a really bad area.Who knows.I live in the area around Sunbury now.(not in it-but a nearby town) but go there at times.Doesnt seem great like it sounds like it was way back when but doesnt feel like I might get mugged going into the local Subway either.

Noone was saying you didnt "know" anything and you dont have to leave the thread. Just an opinion for goodness sakes.

I just spent two weeks back home in Sunbury taking care of business due to my mothers passing. As I went through town I was amazed and disgusted. I wondered what all the construction by the wall was, seemed kinda silly to me tearing up the sidewalk and swings that were placed there for people to enjoy. I was then reminded of the ampatheater project that was shot down by residents. I'm still scratching my head over that one. You want to cut a hole in the flood wall to do what? My mind goes back to the floods in the 70's and 90's, and the extension that was put on top of the wall. Surely there is something better the funds could have been used for. It's just not the town I remember growing up in, sneaking off to the squeeze in for a hotdog, or marlins for a sub during lunch period in high school felt so naughty. It certainly isn't that way now.

Well, one thing for certain, all those who post in this thread are very passionate about Sunbury. Despite disagreements, everyone seems to feel a bit of pain from the growth (and lack thereof) of Sunbury.

The unfortunate thing about the passing of time is things don't always change as we wish them too. Despite all this, Sunbury will always be my home and no where else in this world can fill that void in my heart that was created once I left Sunbury.

It is also very close to Bucknell and Susquehanna university where we see lots of musical performances and hear lectures. They have a decent bicycle shop in Sunbury and lots of alleys where one can bike. There's a great farmer's market and Amish market.

Personally I love it. This talk about "illegals" disturbs me and sounds ignorant. The one regret I have is that it lacks diversity with over 95% white population. I am white myself, but would love to connect folks from Mexico and Central and South America and we could use a decent Mexican restaurant in the town.

I don't know about the rental market, but we bought a wonderful old house in very good shape and are very happy with it. My quality of life has improved considerably since moving here.
Wait till the novelty wears off, sooner or later you will be singing a different song. Sunbury is becoming a spin off of Reading, PA albeit at a smaller scale.

That would be Pine Ghettos I mean Pine Meadows, was a problem a long long time ago, done more harm to SU's image then the town itself since it's very close to the campus. I heard it's even worse now then 20 years ago.

Having a hole in the wall would not be a problem, they would have designed it to accept interlocking panels. I remember a few areas of the wall that were open to the river, one was right on S. Front Street where the Reading Railroad Bridge use to be, they tore it down back in the 90's it crossed S. Front Street by that big high rise building, they patched the wall when they tore the bridge down, I remember seeing that last time I was through. Also down by the old Banana Mart there is a system of panels that can be installed that crosses 61 to keep the creek from flooding that area.

As someone who works professionally in Sunbury, I'd recommend that you look at Danville, Selinsgrove, or Lewisburg for a home. Sunbury has a few nice areas, but in most of the town, you really need to be watchful. Your price range is reasonable for any of the surrounding area cities.

If your an ice cream nut like me, there's a little ice cream place beside the retirement high rise on front street called The Wall. That is a must stop when I get back in the area. There's also a little place in Lewisburg on the right side of the highway about 1/4 mile past the high school (not Rita's). My husband just laughs because I took him a tour of my home town when we were first married and they were all related to food! Ok maybe not all.

Lewisburg Freeze? It used to be a Tastee Freeze. Very good ice cream, which is evidenced by the long lines during the summer!

We have friends who moved to this area from Long Island and they were amazed at the number of ice cream places around here. To me, it's normal!

A lot of kids use to have Ziggy hunts where they will go out in the evening with spot lights driving all over the city looking for him and asking him questions and recording him screaming which was then played by some DJ on WQSU radio. I'm sure he is no longer around or institutionalized?

The shooting happened in 1986, there were bullet holes at one time visible on one of the store fronts downtown, not sure if you can still see them? I just remember when it happened and then the picture in the Daily Item back before they censored anything guy was sprawled out in front of the Edison Hotel with a pool of blood running down the sidewalk after the cop shot him. People were all stirred up.

Sad to see Sunbury decline, it was once a decent small city a long time ago.
Phillip aka ziggy is still around and not instutionalized. he is actually a nice man if ya would give him half a chance. ya show him respect he will show ya some respect back.. as for the lady w/ the make up, her name was mona. Mona use to be a telephone operator and thats why she use to talk in her hands, but her and the husband were in a car accident as i was told in the early 80's and his head was decapitated and fell in her lap. imagine that happening to ya. ya be a lil off your rocker to. on top of that she had blood clots on her brain. if ya would of seen her later on, she stop wearing the make up, she got a home counselor and worked w/ her. ya shouldnt ever put one down til ya know the whole story. what if they were a part of your family. as for sunbury there's a lot of history to learn and i am sad to see that i cant even look it up on the internet.
