with the state looking to improve the Keystone line from Philly to Harrisburg to 75 minutes (
www.planthekeystone.com) and considering upgrades to Pittsburgh, I was wondering what, if any impact people though a faster and more frequent train to Altoona would do for the small city?
currently it's 5h11m from altoona to Philly on the one train a day. if the upgrade for just the eastern portion of the line was implemented, locomotives could be changed in harrisburg, thus cutting travel time to Philly by 40 minutes and travel time to NY by 55 minutes (4h30m to Philly, from 7h05m to NY to 6h10m). If the whole line were upgraded, it's likely that the trip to Philly would be cut to a maybe 3h or less. is that enough to make altoona more attractive? mind you, in altoona's heyday, it was connected quite well by train to major cities. the upgrade would also mean much faster trips times to pittsbrugh.
