Can anyone give me comparisson cities/areas to state college?
Is it a progressive area socially and politically?
Artsy?
Organic/ green Scene?
Are there rural, affordable areas??

I would have to say State College isn't as "progressive" politically as many other college towns. Centre County didn't have a plurality for Kerry and barely squeaked into the Obama column - big difference vs. other university counties like Tompkins County, N.Y.
Clearly by comparison to other sections of PA between Philly and Pgh, it's progressive in both senses though. At least they do clear some of the lefty talk programs on WPSU public radio that never push the VU meters on Pennsyltucky's other public broadcaster, WITF.

I viewed a website which stated where towns voted either red/blue...surprisingly State College was RED (Republican) from what I remember...which is almost unheard of for a college town, especially a college town with that high number of students.

I agree. It's progressive compared to other towns around it, but not to other college towns.
(centre county is the blue one right in the middle)

There are alot of amish and long term Pa residents surrounding the college which will mostly be pretty conservative, either republican or democrat. I was driving through the area and found Air America being broadcast out of State College even though other stations were broadcasting Hannity or Rush or Ingraham. I listened just out of curiousity because its been so long since I could pick up Air America. Its still BAD, even Rush sounds more non partisan and less insulated from reality compared to those people.

Wonder why that is all light pink southwest of Pittsburgh...
I'm also a bit curious as to that light blue area northwest of State College...

Kind of starting to get off topic here - but I recall the outer counties of SW PA were about the only areas that shifted from D to R between 2004 and 2008.
I'm not sure why the D's are relatively stronger in west-central PA than in roughly similar adjacent areas in PA. Clinton County seems a lot more D than Lycoming, for example.

State College is a GREAT place. Tho- I would live closer to Lock Haven for budget and shopping.
