Uniontown or Morgantown?
My partner and I are looking at homes in the Morgantown area. Can anyone offer a comparision between Uniontown and Morgantown. We're coming from the Ann Arbor, Michigan area and have had great experiences living in the "depressed" part of the county even though we could afford the more stuffy "booming" part of town. Thanks.

Uniontown is alot more interesting than morgantown in the way of scenery. It's also alot more friendly. Uniontown is also Weather Challegned. When living in Uniontown you will get very snowy winters ( lots of snow days if you have kids!) and hot summers. Morgantown is more populated than U-town but morgantown is very boring. I'd choose Uniontown.

more weather challenged? uniontown and morgantown are only somewhere around 45 minutes away from each other? Uniontown is a town that is dieing it is very old looking and everything is falling apart. While Morgantown seems to be in a boom. Also in Morgantown there is always something going on, the Creative Arts Center has plays and recitals all through out the summer, WVU makes the town an exciting place to live with a Football team that is pre season ranked #2 in the country, and the basketball team won the NIT tournament last season. How is Uniontown more exciting? There are also a variety of bike trails all over Morgantown. The Mountaineer Triathlon was held here yesterday also, people from around the world come to compete in this triathlon.

They both have their good and bad points. Morgantown is a university town, with some great updated and trendy areas.
Uniontown is growing, and has a nice, but small theatre district. Shopping is better there in the downtown area, since Hardy began sinking $$$ into the city. Nemacolin Resort is up on the mountain, with great activities offered there for residents also. Early American History with Fort Necessity, iron furnaces, along with Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater in the area.
There are national parks nearby to both cities for hiking, camping, fishing. And no matter which one you move to, you're close to either one for all that the other offers.
Taxes maybe cheaper in Fayette County.
You will find depressed areas in both, but the cost of living is low in both areas. Real Estate in both areas is starting to go up, again, depending on the area of the city / county you'll settle in. All my hillbilly relatives live up on the Kingwood Pike outside of Morgantown WV - an area that is fast becoming much desired of the 'moneyed crowd'. My family is from both areas, and I am attached to both areas. There is much history there. There are rowhouses in certain areas of both. There are unschooled and unintelligent there. There is alcoholism, drugs, and problems there, related to unemployment and over-dependence on welfare. There is pride and common sense there, also. There are alot of folk who will help a neighbor out. If you don't have money, the barter system is alive and well.
It all depends on what you are looking for in an area for your family, and what your interests are.
Both are very nice areas, with alot to offer.
blessings, Shen

I have some family that live just south of Uniontown, but they usually head to Morgantown to watch movies, eat, shop, etc. From my impression, both cities are old, but Morgantown has the college to keep it more upbeat. Both have malls, but shopping is better in Morgantown. However, the shopping in Morgantown is very spread out. In Uniontown, shopping is clustered off Route 40 and McClennantown Rd. Both areas have their share of poverty though, but mostly it's in the rural and remote areas.

One thing about shopping, though - PA has no sales tax on clothing, while WV does. Makes a big difference when you're school clothes shopping.

Morgantown, no question.
The younger crowd seems to be more tolerant. I have gay friends that walk around town holding hands without getting hassled at all. Don't let the Yinzers lie to you, Morgantown is actually home to a much more cosmopolitan populace than they think or want to admit. Don't get me wrong, the second you leave the city limits, it might get a little sketchy with the yokels, but there are so many well educated people from a multitude of backgrounds that teach at or attend WVU that you'll barely know you are in Appalachia.
Morgantown itself growing like wildfire right now. It was ranked the #5 small boomtown for business and #9 town of any size for business by Inc. Magazine. There is very nice new housing going up all over town, too. If a person happens to be in the "built in the last 8 months townhouse" market, I think Morgantown might be heaven to them.
You also might get a better answer from the WV board, too.

45 minutes doesnt meen anything. It could be 10 minutes away and get a fe more inches of precip. depending on Elevation. But, agreed about the " always something going on "

I'd take Morgantown over Uniontown in a heartbeat. Uniontown is old, dirty, depressed and has a high crime rate. Morgantown has grown a lot over the years and there's always something going on for everybody, and if ya love the outdoors ya can't beat W.Va.

Morgantown is much more open minded (university town)than Uniontown. Even with its re-birthing going on now, Uniontown has a very small minded mentality. It will eventually grow out of that, but iot will take time. The revitalization of UT is really looking great.
