If you are talking about the small town of Farmingdale L.I., immediatly surrounded by 3 million people in an ocean of suburban sprawl, lots of shopping centers and good schools all connected by a web of freeways and with good public transit and easy access to culture and the arts and as good a job market as anywhere I would recomend suburban Philadelphia for the same kind of atmoshere at a much lower cost. Maybe start in lower Bucks county.

Hi Bella. The Lehigh Valley has lots of people who have relocated from Long Island, Staten Island, etc. who still commute back to NY for work. You may want to post in the Lehigh Valley sub-forum to get more information. I think that areas of Easton such as Palmer, Forks, or Williams would be good choices for you. They are close to Rts. 22 and 78 which take you into NJ and are all nice, family-oriented communities.

I am from Long Island, lived there my entire life. We just moved to Wyomissing last week and I love it.The area reminds me of Long Island, but with more scenery. The schools here in the Wilson School District are EXCELLENT. It is about 3 hours from Long Island.. don't know if that is too far for you, but we travel there a lot because our family is still on LI.

He's not really judging. It's just that PA isn't very friendly. I've lived there all my life and was blown away when people actually talk to you in other areas. IT's kind of a 'cold' state, that's all. It's actually alright when you get to know people, they open up, but it's not friendly either.

He was judging. It never occurs to him that someone might actually have a job that doesn't require them to live in a specific place. Everyone is not in the same boat as him employment-wise.

As for your 'PA isn't friendly,' I dare say that's simply your experience. I can't speak for the East, but Western Pennsylvania is known for friendliness. I'd greatly appreciate your not lumping the entire state together.

I'm not lumping it I'm just stating what my own experience has been. People from PA tend to stay there which makes the family lines run deep and not open to outsiders such as a more metropolitan state would be. IT's not mean, it's true. As far as it not being friendly, I worked for an out-of-state based organization in the state and was one of the only people actually from PA on staff--and everyone said the same thing. It's just not friendly as other places are. That said, it's not bad. It's just different.

Having grown up in philly, schooled in the Lehigh Valley, spent the last 4 years on Long Island, and now looking at a work move to South Central, PA; I hae to tell you that no where is PA is as Aggressive as Long Island. Bucks Couty is beautiful and full of New Yorkers. Doylestown is a friendly area close to 295 and the NJTP. You will not hae the convience of quick acess to strip mall type stuff, PA considers that sprawl. You will have some quiet family neighborhoods and easy acess to urdan NY or PHilly. Good luck

If you love it there...stay. The cost of living in PA is increasing and soon will be skyrocketing. We have HUGE local and state budget problems facing us in the near future. I have actually considered moving to NY since the cost of living isn't much different.
