How familiar are you with Philly? Philly is a large city. Will you be employed and will you need to take public transportation to work? Will you have a car or do you want to walk to shopping? Do you want to be downtown as in Center City or Olde City? Do you want to be near UP or Drexel? These are some questions that you need to answer.

Most parts of Chester County are very nice. Stay away from the city of Chester in Delaware County. Still very run down even though casinos are supposed to be coming. I have heard good and bad about Coatesville. Just check out the area very well before making a committment.

Well those parts are not in Philly. Did you want to live IN Philly, or in the areas surrounding Philly?

Stay Away From Chester And Stay Away From Coatesville Both Are Not Safe At All !!! Chester County And The City Of Chester Are Two Seperate Places And Very Different . The City Of Chester Is One Of The Worst Places As Far As Crime , Drugs , Etc In The Usa . Dont Get Lost In Chester You Might Not Come Out Of It . Coatesville Is Also Drug Infected And Within The City Limits , Its Had To Find A Nice Place To Live ! I Looked And Thought About Moving There . Not The Place To Be, Also Drug Infested And High Crime . I Heard It Was A Nice Working Class Small City About 50 Years Ago .

It doesn't sound like you want to actually live IN Philadelphia, right?

Like others have posted, Chester is pretty much one of the worst areas in Eastern PA. The crime rate is extremely high...basically, it's the antithesis of "safe community."

Chester County is nicer than Delaware County in nearly every way. Cheaper taxes, pastoral setting...Delco is closer to Philly, however. So if you don't like a long commute, Delco is better for you.

If you don't want to be right in center city, I would suggest Chestnut Hill or West Mt. Airy. Both are close to the city (with good transportation into center city), have nice restaurants and are close to malls. And even though you are in the city limits, there are plenty of trees and parks. I would suggest you go to wwwdotphillyblogdotcom/ and click on the Germantown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill discussion board.
