San Diego has plenty of places like that, such as Mission Valley. I was looking at Philadelphia because I have friends in the area and it seemed like a nice city, but I'd rather not live in the ghetto. If you can provide any suggestions, don't feel compelled to limit yourself to PA. I'm open to suggestions all along the East Coast.
you'll be fine in Philly, it's a great east coast city, having friends should certainly make the move easier. are you looking at specific schools?

I haven't been down for a few years so I am just repeating what Florida posters here are saying. They are mostly the ones trying to get out I guess. If your mortgage isn't upside down and you have a job then things will look much better.

Any places comparable to San Diego on the East Coast?
The Pennsylvania forum is not the best place to be posting question about the east coast. You must have been looking out the window during geography class. Pennsylvania is a landlocked state, quite a few miles from the east coast.

About 250 miles south of Philadelphia is an area know as Hampton Roads, located on the east coast in southeastern Virginia. Among other cities, Hampton Roads includes Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Hampton Roads does have some similarities to San Diego. Virginia Beach is situated on the Atlantic ocean, so you go the beaches. Like San Diego there are also big naval bases in the area. However, the hot humid summers and the cold gray winters are likely to be a big disappointment after living in San Diego. On the other hand, housing prices and the general lower cost of living are likely to be a pleasant surprise compared to San Diego.

If you like San Diego, you'll like Northern Virginia. It's pretty much like a more educated version of San Diego without a beach.

CosmicWizard~ lol.. that was funny , have to say!

Yes, I agree... PA is not the place to be looking at all. I mean, yes, a fairly okay drive to the coast from some areas of the state, but there are so many other nice areas to look.
What about the Eastern Shore of MD? Although not as large certainly as San Diego ,much more rural, there are some nice towns on the Eastern Shore.... Easton,St. Michael's.... if not, why not even try places in New England? MA, NH or Rhode Island?
I didn't read through the entire post to see what exactly you are looking for, I just know that nothing in PA is like San Diego....

Ain't that the truth! For better or worse, it's almost as if PA and San Diego are located on 2 different planets.

Then when we grow up and see what we can do with our money this whole dream of owning a house in San Diego goes away.
