Default Need help with driving directions, etc.

My husband is in the USP Canaan penitentiary and I would like to visit him. The only problem is that when trying to get driving directions from Mapquest, Google, et. al., they do not recognize the actual address of the institution and will only give me directions to "Waymart, PA 19472". The actual address is 3057 Easton Turnpike. I am, however, learning a little more about the surroundings as I have found that this is located in Wayne County. I need information on the closest lodging accommodations, whether there is a train station nearby, and explicit driving directions if someone can help.

Much appreciated.

It's out in the woods outside Scranton.

Sometimes addresses with institutions are wack. I would guess that this place is in an area where they skip a lot of numbers... like 3057 isn't a "real" address but a theoretical number where it would be if there were houses around it.

Here's a link to google maps showing where it is and where the nearest motels are to Canaan Pen: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...,+Pennsylvania

There's no passenger rail service in Northeast PA (although there are proposals for its extension to New York in the future...)

Where are you coming from? There's Grayhound service to Northeast PA, and you'll be able to get a local bus to Carbondale, which is a couple miles away from Canaan. But it'd probably be much easier to drive if there's anyway you can get access to a car.

You might want to call the Pen and ask them what's the best way to do it.

Send me a "private message" if you would. If you give me your starting point I can give you very specific directions to their "front door"
Hope this helps!

Hi, I am very familiar with Waymart, it is a very rural, local town, there are actually 2 prisons in Waymart, one is fairly new, which is the one I think you're looking for. Easton Tpke is the same as Rt. 296, and it would be very near where Rt. 296 crosses Rt. 6. If you are coming from NY or NJ area, I would suggest Rt 84 to Hamlin exit, then that road would take you straight into Waymart. There is a Comfort Inn right at the exit of Rt. 84. The prison is about a 1/2 hr ride from there. It is a nice ride.

I've stayed at that particular Comfort Inn several times now and it's a nice place to stay. Very affordable, clean, with complimentary breakfast.

Thanks guys! I am traveling from WV though, I think I have pretty good directions that I finally found on the internet....so it's a small enough town that I will be able to find my way around once I get there...?

Default Visiting Waymart

Small enough town? Well Waymart only has one traffic light
If you are staying at the Comfort INN in Hamlin that was mentioned before, you'll take rte 296 N to Waymart. The prison entrance will be on your left right before you get to the Crossroads Restaurant on your right.
If you're approaching Waymart from rte 6 from the Scranton/ Rte 81 area, you'll go into Waymart and make a right at the only light (by two gas stations). You'll go through the town (about one mile), pass the Crossroads on your left, and less than a quarter of a mile will be the prison entrance on your right.
Hope that helps

That is not far from Honesdale. I believe it is pretty simple to get to.
We past it several times while driving around the area. You can see it high up on a hill. Once you are close to it, you can't miss it.

There is a huge windmill farm right near the prison, you can't miss those windmills!
