Mechanicsburg is booming right now with a lots of new shopping and housing going in, including a Wegmans grocery store. The east shore is of course seeing its fair share of growth as well, but the west shore (Camp Hill/Hampden/Mechanicsburg) has always been the premiere suburban area of the Harrisburg metro.
Mechanicsburg being a "drive to everywhere you want to go" couldn't be further from the truth, as a matter of fact the area around the borough of Mechanicsburg has the most diverse shopping areas in the entire metro! East Hanover and West Hanover have NOTHING, you have to drive to Lower Paxton on Rt 22 (horrible traffic) for everything else except Giant.

I wanted land and didnt want my neighbors hearing me flush the toilet. I made a complete study of all the suburbs around harrisburg moving from Carlisle about 30 minutes from Harrisburg and West hanover was the best for building a custom home. I have alot more on RT22 (east shore) than camphill has for what I want (I like massive choice on shopping) I also wanted Hershey close for recreation and the best hospital/specialty doctors as this is the money area of central pa. Your excited about Wegmans? Its a grocery store moving into a defunct lowes store. I guess it depends on what you want if you want growth potential (buy low sell high scenario) then move to east shore and build if you want already built and close neighbors plus I dont know where you would find the shopping in all those housing areas eh maybe the cul-desac is desirable its not for me. I have to have at least an acre and no traffic on my street. Thats me im weird.

Middletown is nice. There are some nice complexes there with pools and basketball courts - right in the middle of town is a grocery store.
Not too far from downtown.

There's still plenty of open land near Blue Mountain. And Wegmans isn't moving into a defunct Lowes, it's opening up in a brand new shopping center with a Target, Best Buy and the area's first Longhorne Steakhouse, Cheeburger Cheeburger, Chick-Fil-A and other restaurants.
Traffic is already a nightmare and with a nearby casino it is going to be madness in your area. There's fewer roads, and the new developments all consist of poorly planned sprawl (which of course we have our fair share over here too).

True but the nice thing is all the money coming in and we still have alot of farms most of the land from harrisburg west (30 miles or so) is all used up already and the land that isnt already bought is sky high. Dont get me wrong in east hanover north of RT81 is expensive now too because of the casino going in. But land south of RT81 going towards Hershey is still buy able not for me anymore as I dont want to pay $50,000 for an acre or more. Im moving myself out of here (west hanover). But if a person wants good schools close under 10 minutes to the heart of the city and 1 acre plots with great highways RT81,RT22,RT39 three different ways to go to the heart of the city Harrisburg. Smart thing would be to buy 100 acres in east hanover south of RT81 in a couple of years you would have a million dollars profit.

I grew up on over 10 acres right off Wertzville Road and I81. Who says there isn't any land in the area? Several other family members also own 10+ acres in the imediate area. Larger land holdings will be far more valuable then acre lots once water and sewar make it to the area.

Take a look at the linglestown area. Its just now being built up and there are lots of great houses and townhouses being built in the area. Shopping is very close less than 5 minutes away. The major highway RT81 is very close also very easy to jump on the highway to bypass traffic lights and get to other places in the area. We just got a brand new high school in linglestown area. Its still a bit rural but you get room and new houses plus the closeness of shopping nearby. Its exactly 7 minutes on average from my door to downtown Harrisburg using RT81.

I have a relative that lives near Linglestown (exit 72 off of I-81). It seems like a nice area when I have visited her.

i agree with siamese2 - downtown hbg on the riverfront is simply gorgeous and rowhomes are very pricey - then there's the developing nightlife, quaint boutiques, etc., so i would say from front st. to second - i would definitely live there but beyond 2nd st., through 30th, probably not....hbg schools have a very bad reputation
