moving to Harrisburg pa (Carlisle, Hanover: crime, lawyers, selling a house)

Can anyone out there tell me what parts of harrisburg is nice to live. I have a husband and 10 years old son. I want to live not to far from a supermarket if possible. But a quite section. Yes we do have cars.

Camp Hill is a very nice area to live and have children. There are several supermarkets and the best farmers market in the area. Camp Hill school district is great as well.

I live in the West Hanover area. It is east of Harrisburg, and 5 minutes from Hershey. It is a developing area, and the West Hanover elementary school is great.

you're better off living outside of harrisburg. all of it is like a ghetto. never going down there for business again.

I am selling a house in Mechanicsburg currently. Mechanicsburg is about a 10-15 minute drive from Harrisburg. We live in a very desireable neighborhood with lots of children, a neighborhood pool and tennis courts. We are about 2 minutes from the nearest public park and also a grocery store. They are also going to open a Wegmans grocery store about 5 minutes away. If you would like more information, let me know.

Prior to leaving PA, I've been to Enola, Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg, Carlisle, and Newville (farm country). If you like the quiet life and don't mind a 30/45min drive, I suggest looking from Mechanicsburg South. Best of Luck.

Downtown Harrisburg is not a Ghetto - I never understand why people make statements like that and can only assumed they have grown up in rural areas and are not used to city life. All cities have areas that are crime ridden - there isn't a city out there that doesn't. Harrisburg is no exception. There are wonderful historic rowhomes in midtown where there is a large population of young professionals (lawyers, doctors, accountants, etc....) and some great community "feel".

You might have issues though in Harrisburg with the school districts. I am not an expert here - I have no children.

Some areas to look at if you are interested in the city are Shipoke, Midtown and near Italian Lake.

Camp Hill is wonderful area particularly for your 10 year old. The kids all walk to school, and there is a strong sense of community and great school districts. You will be very close to Harrisburg. The largest Giant grocery store in the state is here in Camp Hill - and it is wonderful! (I know being near a grocery store is an important criteria for you)

I'd agree with previous posters about Mechanicsburg - that is a great spot too.

I also live in west hanover but im moving as the taxes are too high for me. Im heading out west. East hanover is very close to harrisburg about 10 minutes to downtown off RT81. You can still get land reasonible out there. West hanover is getting real expensive right now in just 10 years land has tripled in value.

I'd agree with previous posters about Mechanicsburg - that is a great spot too.

Camphill is more expensive an somewhat oldier west shore of harrisburg used to be the rich area but now its just old and traffic filled. Mechanicsburg is nice buts its 20-30 minutes from harrisburg and typically a drive to anyplace you might want to go to. The east shore is where the growth is happening in west hanover township and east hanover township. Buy an acre of land and build your house there. You will instantly make $5,000-$15,000 in property value if you want to flip your house. We are getting a casino about 10 minutes away towards northeast side of harrisburg (grantville) and it will have alot of service jobs but some technical as well. Land around the casino is very expensive right now.

Sorry, but Camp Hill is the premier suburb in the Harrisburg area. There's a reason it is expensive. Beautiful homes, tree-lined streets and a line of upscale shops and restaurants/bistros on Market street. The vast majority of Mechanicsburg is less then 15 minutes from downtown Harrisburg, not sure where you are getting the 20-30 from. Mechanicsburg is booming right now with a lots of new shopping and housing going in, including a Wegmans grocery store. The east shore is of course seeing its fair share of growth as well, but the west shore (Camp Hill/Hampden/Mechanicsburg) has always been the premiere suburban area of the Harrisburg metro.

Mechanicsburg being a "drive to everywhere you want to go" couldn't be further from the truth, as a matter of fact the area around the borough of Mechanicsburg has the most diverse shopping areas in the entire metro! East Hanover and West Hanover have NOTHING, you have to drive to Lower Paxton on Rt 22 (horrible traffic) for everything else except Giant.
