I am a nursing student who currently lives in North Carolina. I will graduate my nursing program in May of 2013. After graduation, I am interested in moving to Florida and working as a nurse.

I have considered several areas in Florida, and I have recently added Pensacola to my list of considerations. I know that there are good hospitals in the area, but I'd like to know a bit about what it's like there. I want to live on the beach, or in a home where I can at least see the ocean. I love heat, humidity, thunderstorms, and sunny weather. I know hurricanes happen occasionally, but that's not a major concern for me.

In short, what's Pensacola like? What's it like to live there (especially the areas on and near the beach)? Is crime a major problem, and are there plenty of interesting things to do?

Pensacola is sketchy, but for beach living you would be on Pensacola Beach, which is fine. Where in NC would you be moving from?

I would be moving from a small town (county population approximately 70,000) about 45 minutes from Charlotte. I'm about five minutes from the NC and SC border, and about 30 minutes from Spartanburg, SC.

I would put Pensacola in the same league as Fayetteville,NC. Mostly southern with lots of military presence.

Yeah, southernnaturelover hit the nail on the head. Fayetteville reminds me a lot of P-cola. But Pcola Beach has a Wrightsville Beach feeling, but with better parking.

The thing is in Pensacola you have miles of beach from there to Destin.Navarra beach is a really nice park with no develpoment and its just a short drive away. Perhaps some of the whitest sands in the Destin area of any beach in Florida.

Have heard to avoid 'West Pensacola" for housing....how far north does this area include? Was also wondering about West Cresent Lake area; is it safe?

I assume you're talking about the area near Marcus Pointe? It's probably okay, however the further west and south you go towards Fairfield Ave the more "iffy" it gets.
