This is probably more of a rant against our lack of local grocery options, but I have lived all over the east coast from Florida to New York. I can say without a doubt that this is probably the least served area I have lived in. Basically, it comes down to 3 choices (Public, Winn-Dixie, SureFine/IGA Type).

There are few options for the SureFine shopping, but I use them for things like produce and cheese. Where else are you going to get shredded cheese for less than $4 a pound?

Winn-Dixie is a cave. Every store I have been in is dark. I joke with my wife that I need a headlamp to go shopping there. Right or wrong, because it’s dark, it feels dirty to me. I get pre-packaged pork loins and few BOGO’s there. They don’t have carry the really exotic stuff, like wasabi paste. Is Wasabi paste really that exotic?

Publix is expensive. I basically buy milk and BOGO’s there. It’s not a pleasure to shop there. I avoid the deli even if there isn’t a line, because it somehow still takes forever!

The rest of stuff, mainly meat is purchased 25 minutes away at Fresh Market, which is pricey, but I like that their chicken breasts aren’t pumped full of whatever Publix is using to add bulk to their chicken breasts.

I was spoiled by living next door to a Wegmans and having a TJ’s down the road as well. I stumbled across Lidl during the holidays. They seem like a reasonable alternative as well and are very inexpensive.
Rant done. Publix needs some real competition to become more competitive.
