fewest number of people died of cancer in a long time.

Please post a link. Cancer deaths were way down one year ago, too, unrelated to COVID.

It is difficult to believe all we hear on the news about "science" because some people in the media are telling us what they want us to hear and some are giving us half of the truth. I guess we have to weed through the smoke and mirrors and determine our own destiny. The government sure isn't helping in portraying the facts or the truth in recent years and it is heartbreaking that they are so secretive.

I was born and raised in Pensacola and miss the beaches like crazy but like the OP, am daunted by what I've seen as far as resistance to masks and politicizing COVID. I live in a Southern State that has adapted masks during the pandemic - and no matter your political party, most here wear them without making a fuss. Until the majority of people have either had the virus or have been vaccinated, you wear a mask not just for yourself but to protect those around you. Yes, guidance has changed as we've learned more and more about the virus. And yes, it may be just like the flu for some. But for someone at home with a teenager with asthma or a husband with immune disorders, it could be deadly. You never know who you could pass it onto if you're in a store or closed space unmasked.

Does Pensacola have a group of people who believe scientists? While we enjoy a diversity of perspective, we don't want to be the only ones who believe that climate change is real and that science matters. We do not mind if our neighbors fly a Trump flag, but we don't want to be the only ones without one.
If you are so afraid of people with different views (not sure why - do you think they are going to hurt you?), you could just self isolate.

what is the government being secretive about? They've been working on the vaccine when both political parties have been in the WH. Are both sides lying?

When it comes to social distancing and wearing masks, yes, than can likely hurt you.

And, that would be 100% of the time, unequivocally, incorrect.
