A very fine 22 calibre pistol has come to my attention with the engraved inscription "Ross Semple 1890 West Virginia". Census records for 1880 and 1900 show him born in Ohio about 1868 and living in Steubenville Ohio with his father, Robert J. Semple, a locksmith/gunsmith. Does anyone know of him? Or his father?
YES! He is the son of Robert John and Sarah Jane Semple. He was born in June 1867 in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio where he lived. Between 1900 and 1910 he moved to West Virginia and later in 1920 in Pennsylvania. His father was a descendent of Joseph Tremau Sippy who fought in the Revoluntionary War and was a marine in the french army under Rochambeau. He father was a Gun and Lock Smith. You have a wonderful find there! You can find out more about his family on "The Sippy Family" facebook page. We would love if you would photograph the gun and post a photo there for us. Thanks so much!
Great find. It reminds me of a good friend of mine whose grandfather left him a sword that he picked up while in Japan soon after WW2. Just recently it was discovered that sword was made by a man in the 13th century. His name was underneath the leather grip. That sword was sold to an samori expert in Japan for well over $30,000. It is now in a museum.
