Can't find anything on the net regarding the naval ship mishap that you describe. Do you have any other details?

The most famous naval ship explosion in CA occurred during WW2 when an ammunition ship exploded at Port Chicago Naval Weapons Station (just north of Concord, CA). It produced one of the largest non-atomic man-made explosions in history. I never recall reading about a naval ship explosion in the 1980s.

This is the closest match to an incident of that type that I can find:
Pacific 08/02/88: The USS Constellation (CV-64) suffers an engine room fire which forces the
carrier to cancel scheduled operations and returnto port in San Diego, California. The fire,
believed caused bya fuel oil leak, begins with an explosion inone of the ship's four engine
rooms around noon and is finally extinguished about nine hours later after several subsequent
explosions caused by heat from the initial fire. Twenty sailors suffer burns, bruises, and
smokeinhalation.
There is a USS Constellation facebook page here:

@recycled ~ I've lived in CA for many years and I can't believe I've never heard or read about the Port Chicago explosion in 1944, until doing the search last night. That was so horrific and terribly sad.
