How does one go about finding old obituaries? I am looking for one that is from 1980's from PA.

Thank you in advance.

Google is your friend.

If that doesn't work, find the newspaper or library in the town in question and ask how to access the newspaper archives.

Wikipedia:List of online newspaper archives - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lists digitized newspapers by geographic location. Some are free, but some are pay. You may be able to access some of the pay databases at a public library.

Do you have a specific name & date you are searching?

Some libraries will tell you names over the phone. Some send you a copy be e-mail, or regular mail.
Some for no charge. Some charge you for their research plus postage. I recently paid $5.50 for one and it did contain quite few names and locations.

1-24-2013 The Free Library of Philadelphia (Free Library of Philadelphia) has newspaper archives that can perhaps assist with your request. There may be a small fee. Not exactly sure whether Albert died in Philadelphia or whether his funeral was held there, but I guess we can safely assume that that is the case since his parents lived there. Alva J. (the father) died Nov. 26, 2004 in Philly and Blanche died June 16, 2011 in Philly. As an additional search tip, if I were you I would call a library in Philadelphia to ask to check city directories for 2011 to see what Blanche's address (assuming she had a listing for her own residence--not sure if she would be living with a family member or nursing home because of her advanced age) was and write a letter there to see if whoever lives there now can refer you to family or ask the neighbors if they could do so.

knort4, thank you for your lead. I contacted FLP - Newspapers FAQs (free Library of philadephia) via telephone. I was given instructions as to how to proceed.

Search isn't going to be free but certainly worth it. I will be back to the thread to give updates.

Thank you all for your replies.

Ami

I was contacted by the Free Library of PA. They are really quick to repond to archival requests and the service is great.

That being said, it yielded very little info. They could not locate the obits for Alva Hauen (2004) Blanche Hauen (2011) I'm thinking that the Hauens requested that it be done that way.

Regarding Albert Hauen, it was just a funeral notice.

HAUEN, of Phila. Sept. 4, 1984 Albert T., son of Alva J. and Blanche F. Hauen. Service Friday 10 A.M. at The Fletcher Funeral Home. Int. Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may call Thursday after 7 P.M.

That's it. The next step would be to call the funeral home to find if they have the obits. I doubt it though.

(BTW, I am the contributor to the FindAGrave memorial for the Hauens.)

After all these yrs, I'm still saddened by the death of Albert.
