I have found someone who lives in Franklin Township, the location of Lena Ward, John B. Ward and Donald in 1940. Their expertise is history for that area of Pa.
I'll send you some of the details and hopefully they can find something new. Many offices are closed this week so maybe allow until next week.

I was finally able to reach the history department for the U.S. Army in Carlisle Pa. I'm very sorry but they were unable to locate an individual photo or a group photo of Mr. Ward. They explained that a photo of his group or company would be close to impossible because of the extremely fast moving events of the war and the specific time frame when Donald was in Europe.

Your nice webpage shows that Donald received the Purple Heart with the Oak Leaf Clover. The person who chatted with me for maybe 15 minutes about ideas on locating a photo said that the Oak Leaf signifies two Purple Hearts. One for being wounded and the other for being a casualty.

----------------------------------------------------------------
He has been given a nice honor roll page on this site.
If you don't have this photo, or this webpage, it is very nicely done, as is the one you have created yourself in memory of Mr. Ward.

Just enter the last name of Ward and go down the page to his name and open the webpage.

The Ward ancestry in Pennsylvania.
Donald was grandson of John Bell Ward.
John B Ward's father and grandfather were farmers in Greene County, first located in Morgan, Greene Co. census 1830.

John Bell Ward was son of Nathan Ward 1844-1918 & Sarah Elizabeth Sharp 1849-1923, Greene County, Pennsylvania

Nathan Ward was son of John Ward born in Greene County 1805 and Minerva Gray born 1810 Greene County.

Children of John & Minerva Ward: Catherine, Phineus, John, Nathan,Norton

Children of Nathan & Sarah Ward: Manerva, John Bell, HenryC, Winfield, JS, Laura, Thomas L

.........
Donald appears to son of Pearl Ward because John Wolfe said he was his brother. I could not find a marriage for Pearl Ward prior to the Wolfe one. That does not mean she was not necessarily married to Donald's father, only that I could not find it.

John Bell Ward and Lena Loray Roupe had three children --all daughters:

Daisy Lena Ward
b 28 March 1893
d 14 Oct 1964
married 1913 to Elmer Ward Hull (1890-1956) went by Ward Hull
had son George Hull
all in Washington County, Pennsylvania

Pearl May Ward
b Sept 1897
d unlocated information- before 1920 census..(1918-1920)
married 1914 Clarence Wolfe (1892-1969)
Marriage license has her last name misspelled as Waard...Clarence Wolfe 22, and Pearl May Waard 21
on his 1917 WWI registration, he claimed wife, child, mother as dependents
In 1920 Ward household Clarence Wolf is widowed with sons Geo W & John R.
Clarence married 1923 Elizabeth Horne
1935 lived Waynesburg, Greene Co, Pennsylvania
1940 Belmont, Ohio worked at coal mine, loader
with 22 year old wife Lois and two children Clarence 1& Charles 2
Clarence Wilson Wolfe died Oct 1969 Mansfield, Pennsylvania leaving 6 sons:
Charles, James, Robert, William all of Mansfield; Clarence Jr, and George of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Mary Elizabeth Ward
b 1899
d 1988
married 24 Nov 1916 John Lacey Smith (died 1983)
She was 17, he was 21
Children posted at familytree, not verified:
Clarence 1917-1918
John W 1919-1919
Margaret Lena 1921-2001
William Edgar 1923-2011

In 1930 Oct 30 divorce filed
Finalized 16 Dec 1930
Mary Elizabeth Ward Smith received custody of children Margaret Lena & Frederick Warren
Then she re-married.
Married 1931 March 18 Bayard Henry Spragg
Known child- Bayard Thomas Spragg 1932-1972
You sure have found alot of information about Mr. Ward.
Some documents are being forwarded to me that contain a few new details about Mr. Ward, confirm alot of what you have found, and how things may have happened after the day he was born and into the 1940's and about his daughters, one of which was born after he left for Europe.

Hi Benedikte
Where did you find the marker for John B. and Lena?
The name of the cemetery is needed by a volunteer in Green County, Pa.

I did see the Gutherie name posted in someone's tree as father of Helen Louise Rush but it had no supporting documentation. Did you find supporting documents such as recorded marriage, birth certificate, death certificate, family bible entry, wills & court actions, property transfer, obituaries, funeral home records, etc? I did not locate a marriage license for Helen Louise on which she entered Gutherie as her father's name.

I think that a Roupe ancestry researcher in Pennsylvania, if there is one, would provide best opportunity for locating a living descendent since both Donald & Helen Louise were each Roupe family descendents. I outlined the Roupes in an earlier post. Interestingly in those census records Lena L Roupe & her siblings were often classified as mulatto, as was her Mother Maria/Mariah. Lena's father Silas Roupe was classified as white. I did not locate Maria Roupe's maiden name.

Louise Anna White is the only living relative of Louise Ward that Benedikte has been able to communicate with at this point.
A researcher in Pa. is forwarding some documents and we'll see what they have found. The tinyiest of clues could be the one.
One of Donald's daughters was a foster child from my understanding.
