SouthernBelle,
Your title mentions the s.s death index. We had a good link for that but it is no longer supported.
If someone can post a link to the best s.s. death index it can be of value to others.

Social Security Death Index SSDI Records Search - GenealogyBank

Bear in mind that Genealogy Bank says they are "no longer able to display SSDI records for individuals who have died within the previous 3 years."

But the LDS site has listings for 2014 !!

Belle, have you just searched on the name? A death might show up as an obituary in a local paper.

Where I have lived, you have to pay for obits unless the deceased was very well-known. Will try the others, thanks.

Southern sometimes if you just google their name like this :john smith: the obits will come up. But not always.

We had a good one to familytreelegends. It was well organized with names, numbers, where the s.s. number was issued for birth locations, last residence and whether the death had been verified and by whom.
Now that link goes to www.myheritage.com which is less useful.

Yes, FTL was good while it lasted.

When it was independent, Rootsweb had the best free SSDI access. They showed all the fields from the original SSA Death Master File. When Ancestry bought Rootsweb, they moved access to their pay site. And cut back the fields shown

RootsWeb: Database Index

The LDS site seems the best today. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1202535
