My family name is Speight. Before the 1800's the spelling was Spaight. My grandfather's name was Jesse and he had a brother whose name was Charles. They had 4 sisters. They were from the Roanoke Rapids and Rocky Mount area. My father's name was Jerry Speight. If anyone has any information for me, please let me know. Thank you.

How far back do you have this line traced? I did find Spaight under the 1850 Census Slave Schedule..
I also found some names under the marriage bonds..
Hezekiah Spaigh bondsman for marriage of Jervis Spaight and Ranza Thompson 10 Mar 1841 in Robeson County
Jervis Spaight and Eadeth Taylor Robeson County bondsman-Charles Ivey, J
Williamson Spaight and Flora Jane Shepherd married on 20 Jun 1851 Robeson County Bondsman- Charles Ivey, J witness-Shadrach Howell..
Richard Dobbs Spaight and Mary Leech married on 24 Sep 1788 in Craven County bondsman-Abner Neale witness-Saml Chapman
David Spaight and Penny Harrell married on 19 Nov 1825 in Gates co. bondsman- James Briggs witness-J Sumner
Thomas M Keerl and Charles Spaight Donnell 28 Jan 1858 Craven bondsman-Richard J Donne witness-J G Stanly, Clerk of Court
Spaight M Reel and E M Clemmer 12 Aug 1866 Lincoln co. bondsman- John A Brown witness-W R Clark
James H Spaight Elizabeth Benton 11 Dec. 1854 Gates co. bondsman- David Benton

There is lots more.. on that name.. You states your dads name was.. I take it for father passsed on... if you could give me more info on him I could help follow the line more.. such as date of death whom he married where he was born and or died.. It is easier to follow his name back then pick up on his parents and go back..

Default Spaight-Speight

Thank you so much for your reply. From the information that was in my great-grandmother's bible, she and my great-grandfather were married on May 9, 1877, in N.C. They had 6 children; 2 boys and 4 girls. In my father's notes given to me, Richard Dobbs Spaight was born in New Bern, N.C. in 1758. He must be the one you speak about, marrying in 1788. Apparently, was a signer of the U.S. Constitution and a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1783 to 1785. Then was governor of N.C. from 1792 - 1795. Then served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1798 - 1801. My father was Jerry Franklin Speight born Feb. 27, 1907 in Rocky Mount, N.C. to Jesse and Mary Sheffield Lewis Speight. He died in Jesup, Ga. 12-11-1990. Would love to hear back from you if you can add anything. I know that my dad's cousin, Louise Taylor Warren, and her husband had a nursery in North Carolina at one time, before 1990. Her birthdate was 7-22-1917. Her husband's name was Fred Warren. I would assume they have both passed away by this time. Thanks again.
