Looking for James McBride, my FIL (genealogy, children, old, father)

At least I think that's his name since she called him "Jamie". My DH's mother has been pretty tight-lipped about his biological father. All she will tell us is that his name is James McBride and that they met in NY (either the Bronx where she lived or Brooklyn). I'm guessing he would be close to her age, so anywhere around 65-73 years old now. She claims he was in the Navy (but my research seems to lead me toward the Army). My DH was born 05/01/73 in Manhattan, so James definitely would've been living in NY circa 1972. MIL also says that she *thinks* he's from Alabama. Funny thing is...my DH took one of those genealogy tests and the geographical results indicates that he's predominately Irish; McBride seems to be an Irish surname. Why his family would be in Alabama, I haven't got a clue.
Can anyone help? I've been searching my fingers off, and while I've come up w/ some likely matches, all of the puzzle pieces don't exactly fit. We now have children, and my DH is 42 years old and has never met his father. He's practically given up, but I'm still trying.
I have NO idea what I was thinking, but his name is Tony McBride, not James. And "Tony" could be short for Anthony or Antonio (or some other variation).
