I know that this may be a long shot, but I'm hoping someone can help me.
Before my dad passed away seven years ago, he was researching our family tree. He had traced our family's roots back to an area called either Waggoner or Waggaman, LA. My great-great grandfather was a slave name Perry Handy. He was born there in 1853. I am having a little trouble finding this area. Is anyone familiar with the area?
My last name is Handy. There are NOT a lot of Handys in Mississippi. I am originally form McComb, MS and from my understanding, most of the Handys in that area came from Louisiana.
My great-grandmother's family was also from Louisiana. Her family name was Varnado. I believe that they were from Tangipahoa Parish.
I am really interested in locating Waggoner or Waggaman, LA. Any information on any of the above will be appreciated.
