Your question is very broad. Are you trying to locate ancestors of a particular person?
If searching the ancestry of a particular person or family than start with what you know and work back generation by generation. Look for U.S. census records, naturalization records, passenger manifests, vital records, etc. Try
www.familysearch.org to locate these types of records.
Depending on where in The U.S. they settled than local genealogy resources can be suggested.
If the family was Jewish than
www.jewishgen.org has many databases from around the world to search, including 19th century revision lists from The Russian Empire, and records from many other countries.
Please give us more specifics so we can try to guide you in your search.
