US Bank charged me $1.00 for a balance statement at the ATM. Inside, they would have charged me $1.50. I always check my balance online, but I need proof of my balance for the food stamp office, so I had to print a balance statement from the US Bank ATM, and also from the credit union ATM (which was free).

Typical big bank, charging fees for every little thing.
I read an online article somewhere stating that because the big banks are doing away with free checking accounts, that many people are closing them and joining credit unions, most of which still offer free checking accounts with no direct deposit or minimum balance requirements.
Here's a really funny video from San Diego County Credit Union showing what the banks REALLY care about:
I use the US Bank checking account for paying my rent, since my landlord tends to not cash it right away. I just use it enough to keep it open, and my primary account is in a credit union. When I went into the US Bank branch to deposit my rent money, the teller asked if I would like to set up a direct deposit. My reply was, "why would I want to?"
US Bank members check your statements. I got the $6.95 maintenance fee a month early, and doubt I'm the only one. They give me a refund when I talked to the teller. I still find it shady that the letter said the fees kick in July 24th, yet I was charged the fee in June.

Maybe they get a commision if someone signs up for direct deposit. My direct deposits go into my credit union account, and the US Bank account gets minimal usage.

ah, well, I think they do commision for direct deposit. I have had bad experiences with US bank also. They used to be my primary bank until I realized I could switch to USAA. USAA is the best bank out there, much like a credit union.
