Here's one I witnessed lately.
Someone you know (but not a close friend or family) sends you an email that states:
) They're in a foreign country and have just been robbed at gunpoint, they're very upset
) Robber took all their money, their credit cards, their cell phone (so you can't call them), everything except their passport.
) They need to pay the hotel and pay for their flight back to the U.S.
) They need you to Western Union them money right away, sometimes thousands of dollars
It's a scam. Their email account was hacked and the hacker is pulling a scam. a) How convenient that the robber stole their cell phone. If you can call a family member or close friend of the person robbed, do it b) Why would the person robbed not have a prepaid return ticket back to the U.S.? Do people really travel to another country paying for a one-way ticket each way? c) Why would they email their random email contacts, and not try family first?
Be aware!
