Here's one I witnessed lately.

Someone you know (but not a close friend or family) sends you an email that states:

) They're in a foreign country and have just been robbed at gunpoint, they're very upset
) Robber took all their money, their credit cards, their cell phone (so you can't call them), everything except their passport.
) They need to pay the hotel and pay for their flight back to the U.S.
) They need you to Western Union them money right away, sometimes thousands of dollars

It's a scam. Their email account was hacked and the hacker is pulling a scam. a) How convenient that the robber stole their cell phone. If you can call a family member or close friend of the person robbed, do it b) Why would the person robbed not have a prepaid return ticket back to the U.S.? Do people really travel to another country paying for a one-way ticket each way? c) Why would they email their random email contacts, and not try family first?

Be aware!

I got this one a few months ago - supposedly from my sister-in-law.

She was visiting me when I got the email

Edited to add - the email address was an old AOL address she had stopped using years before.

My dad got this. Ironically, the friend he got this from (supposedly) was indeed on vacation, but in another country!

Default I got this twice!

I called the family member it was from and they were home. The e-mail said they were in London and got robbed and needed cash to pay the hotel bill and get home to the U.S.

People who do this to others are dirtbags to the max!

I've gotten this email twice. The first time, it supposedly came from my therapist. The email says "I am writing to you with tears in my eyes..." I just laughed hysterically and deleted it.
