We bought a new minivan last year. It was 23% of our gross pay. Before that, we had not bought a car for 10 years.

We're spending about about 10k per 100 k miles not including repairs, although I expect those minimal. Not the cheapest car, but a very nice car that should hold up well.

Hmm well I don't pay the car off in one payment or year. In 2003 I spend 38% of my income then on a new car. But I paid off a 3 year loan in 2 years, so my costs dropped to about 19% of my two year income. These figure still are not accurate, my trade in cut my amount I owed in half.

The car I am about to purchase is about 3.5% of my yearly income, at $2.3k. The previous car I purchased in 2009 for $800 which was 2% of my income at the time. Plan to keep both for many years to come. My current daily driver I purchased for $1.9k at 20% of my income just after high school back in 2005. That car has 255k miles on it now, and I got about 120k miles out of it myself. The first car I owned was purchased for $1.5k, at 50% of my yearly income, while in high school. That one didn't make it long though, since I was rear ended and totaled in 2005. I paid cash for all my vehicles.
