If I understood the scenario correctly, the $20K is to be used for the surgery along with the money from the loan, so a secured loan using the $20K as collateral wouldn't be an option.

Have you explored medical tourism, to India or some other undeveloped country? You may be able to cut that cost to less than half, including your plane fare. The medical facilities and skills that you can afford there are just as good, if not better, that what you can afford in the USA.

my suggestion is go get a full time job that has the insurance to cover the surgery. Doesn't matter what the job pays. Walmart, Kmart. whatever...

$20k will take you years to pay off with interest. You do not want to be in that boat if there's a slight chance of that surgery covered by insurance.

Sounds like you can hold the surgery, since you already know for years you need this.

Medical industry is so corrupted in this country. You do not want to pay retail price for it... Illegals in this country pays no taxes but on Medicaid can get this surgery free of charge. while folks like you and me fork over all the hard earned cash savings to pay the crazy price for them.
