I work for myself, but my husband's company offers both a traditional pension and a 401(k) plan with a 100 percent match for employee contributions, up to 10 percent of their income.
Yes, perhaps, but you can't beat the rock bottom er of .0275%. Plus, even though I don't invest in it yet, the G fund is pretty sweet. So all in all I'm happy with the TSP. The fed financial office sends out an email each year to let people who want to max out know how much they need to contribute each pay period to get the full match for the year.
Yes, the ER is nice, but I have one more complaint about the lack of true-up for the TSP.
In the event someone (let's say, my wife... this year) takes FMLA and only works 8 out of the 12 months, I believe there's no way for her to get the maximum match (if she puts all $17,500 in Jan-Aug). 1/3 of the match she's earned by saving enough is gone forever.
I don't think there's any way around that, and thus it's really lame.
We have a "deferred compensation" which is a pre-tax account similar to a 401k, although no company matching. But I have a nice pension plan, so I can't complain.

We have something similar. Public agency. I have a great pension plan, but I've never been able to afford to put money into the deferred compensation plan so I never joined it.
Wow every time these benefits threads pop up it makes me realize how incredibly awful some companies are getting. I thought that a 401k with 50% match of the first 6% with a 5 year vest was pretty standard. This thread is telling me that's actually pretty terrible comparatively.
