Not too generous - $1 for $1 on first 3% of contribution..and a 5 year vesting schedule

The right question to ask is vesting period ?

It's great if your company is matching but if that is tied to you staying there for 3, 5 or 8 years then not so much.

I've never had a 401K, so zero. Currently self-employed and I intend to stay that way as long as I possibly can.

I work for myself, but my husband's company offers both a traditional pension and a 401(k) plan with a 100 percent match for employee contributions, up to 10 percent of their income.

Mine is dollar for dollar on the first 6%. I also have a pension however new employees are not eligible but they get 3% thrown into the 401K.

Yes, the ER is nice, but I have one more complaint about the lack of true-up for the TSP.

In the event someone (let's say, my wife... this year) takes FMLA and only works 8 out of the 12 months, I believe there's no way for her to get the maximum match (if she puts all $17,500 in Jan-Aug). 1/3 of the match she's earned by saving enough is gone forever.

I don't think there's any way around that, and thus it's really lame.

Dollar for dollar up to 4%, half on every dollar up to 6%.

Vested 30% at 1 year, 70% at two and 100% at three.

We have a "deferred compensation" which is a pre-tax account similar to a 401k, although no company matching. But I have a nice pension plan, so I can't complain.

We have something similar. Public agency. I have a great pension plan, but I've never been able to afford to put money into the deferred compensation plan so I never joined it.

My company matches 5 to 1. So you only need to contribute 1% to get the full 5% matching. Not too shabby.

Wow every time these benefits threads pop up it makes me realize how incredibly awful some companies are getting. I thought that a 401k with 50% match of the first 6% with a 5 year vest was pretty standard. This thread is telling me that's actually pretty terrible comparatively.
