So my co-workers said I need to start going to lunch with them everyday and spend some of my money. I typically bring my lunch.

Later that day I heard them complaining about having to buy a new clothes and a bed for his kid. The other one was complaining about having to pay down credit card debt.

I feel sorry for their kids.

Please. You don't decide such things for anyone except yourself, brown-bagger.

And I don't work with any fabricated people, so "No" is the answer to your question.

What exactly is an "unnecessary purchase"? How do you know it is unnecessary for the one who is making the purchase?

What you consider a waste is not necessarily what others consider a waste.
A lot of people complain just to complain no matter what the topic is. We have never discussed any of our debt with those outside of ourselves and a couple of very close friends who are financially secure and very knowledgeable in the financial area.
Otherwise that topic is between myself and my husband and what we may spend on a vehicle or a long weekend or a new printer you may see as a waste.
On the other hand what you spend on shoes or clothing or whatever it is we may see as a waste.

I hear people complain about having to spend money on all sorts of things. I'm sure you complain yourself about whatever it is you wish you didn't have to pay for.

Why?
People complain about buying things for their kids all the time, even when they can afford it! Going out to lunch had nothing do do with that.

And the people paying down debt... good for them! Maybe that lunch is the only thing they splurge on while they do that.

So, you must sleep on the floor and walk around naked since beds and clothes are 'unnecessary purchases'.

Were they asking you to pay for these items? I'm sure they weren't, they were just venting. I suggest you give them your opinion on their comments, the lunch invites will stop on a dime.
