I guess kind of like how there are guys who don't like sports, at all, which seems crazy to me. I am completely oblivious to what I drive. I couldn't care less as long as it gets me from point A to point B.
Now that I have a family though, I do think it is nice to have at least one somewhat new car. So I think we will be upgrading our 2005 Toyota Corolla to a 2010 or 2011 cross over next year. Plus, the Corrolla just doesn't have enough room for those long trips with suitcases. Then I can sell the '01 Kia and drive the Corrolla for another 5-10 years.
Just talking about this. I want a car that is cheap to buy, cheap to run and runs like iron forever. Don't care what it looks like or how it drives (although this winter I have noticed AWD would be a nice thing to have).
I never repair dings or dents. I keep it in perfect mechanical condition. No one ever bothers my cars because they look like hell. I had a Mazda 323 for 11 years and 170,000 miles, and currently a 2003 Matrix with 123,000. If I lived somewhere with more mountains to pull, I'd get something more serious, but still the cheapest that runs like iron. I have enough expensive tastes without looking at cars as more than necessary transportation. So, no, I'm not cheap, I just don't care about cars. Have never test-driven a new car.
Not caring what you drive will save you a lot of money over the course of your lifetime. Some people really enjoy driving and how it drives is important to them. Then you have the people who wear a car like a diamond ring. They want you to know their station in life.
Me? At 6'2"' I just want something where I fit and don't feel like a monkey on a football!
I care more about the state of my retirement savings than whether or not the vehicle in my driveway impresses the neighbors.
