You don't seem to get that people can't always buy what they need or pay what they owe, even if they are frugal or miserly.
I just answer the question posed.
The OP does ask:
"What are some extreme things you've seen people do eliminate or run from debt?
What are some of the most extreme things you've seen people do to avoid paying their debts or eliminate them?"
An extreme thing is a slash and burn budget. You cut EVERYTHING. No eating out, no entertainment, cut the cable, cut the expensive cell phone plan, buy no clothing unless ABSOLUTELY needed. The only thing you don't cut is shelter and the basic foods. Basic basic basic. All the money you save you put towards the debt.
It's a very hard way to live for a while, but you can make the biggest dent in your debt, and get it paid off in no time. But the upside -- you learn what you WANT to have in your life and what you can do without.
Run from debt? Never seen anyone run, but I have seen people commit financial suicide by not paying. That's their choice, as they claim they don't have money to pay their debts, but they always seem to have money to blow on booze cigarettes and tattoos.

You CAN eliminate debt by paying what you owe.
Simply paying your debt isn't extreme, unless you've had to do something extreme to pay your debt.
