Would everybody please go to their states unclaimed funds website and type in your name. I found over $1.200 bucks that I didn't know I had. I found unclaimed funds for my 2 son's and a friend of mine.
If you don't know where or what office keeps the unclaimed funds, just google 'unclaimed funds' and your state's name.
edited.. Check through a gov't website for best results.
Good luck!

I found $5,000. One of those unclaimed property outfits notified me of the money; but since I had a banking background, I asked if it had been escheated to the state of CA. They copped to it, I found it and got my money without paying a fee. Yay!!!
Congratulations! Found money is always good. Was it a surprise to find out about it?
Would you have had to pay the fee because an unclaimed property outfit told you about it and they want a percentage? Or does Ca. make you pay a fee to collect?
I went through the NY State comptrollers office. That's where they keep records of unclaimed funds. There was no fee through them.
I can only imagine the staggering amount of interest the comptrollers office must make on those unclaimed funds.

This is sage advice for anyone. When a firm contacts you claiming they have found unclaimed property of yours, what they want is a finders fee which will be a percentage of your money. Anyone can log on to the found property websites that all states maintain (just google it) and claim their own property without paying a fee to one of these scummy agencies. These agencies have people combing through public unclaimed property lists and contacting the juiciest clients to try to 'assist' you in claiming your funds, and they will want you to sign a contract relinquishing a portion of your own money over to them.

^^ This happened to me in Tx. This company provided a free service (by tipping me off). Immediately went to the TX Comptroller's website, ran a search, and sure enough - collected a rental deposit from 2003. Serendipity.
So question. is there a separate site for each state thats different from this? Or does this site aggregate all of the state sites?
I think each state has their own offices that keep track of unclaimed funds. In NY it's NYC Comptrollers Office, and when I checked for my friends that live in Pa. it was the Pa. Dept of Treasury. Pa's site tells you whether the refund is under $100.00 or over $100.00 which is nice. NY's doesn't. So any claimed money is a surprise.
I had an old credit card that had money on it and for that I just had to answer a question on line, but to collect on an unclaimed insurance benefit I have to fill out a form and send them some paperwork. It's worth it though.
It makes sense in a way for each state to have their own because I'm sure they're getting interest on all that unclaimed money and I don't think they'd want to share.
And to avoid the scam sites and the sites that charge.. like I said in my original post.
google 'unclaimed funds' and your state's name. Look for the official gov't site.
edited... I used the site you linked to and my son's claim wasn't there and I know he hasn't collected on it yet. I don't think that site is up to date.

The money was a total surprise. It was left in an escrow account from a refinance. The unclaimed property outfit did want a fee, but since I got it directly from the state of CA, I got it back at no charge. Since then, I've found a few more hundred dollars. Sweeeet!
Surprisingly, some people don't care. I found my brother's name on the list twice. On entry was for under $100, the other over. I sent the information to him via email, and he never followed up.
