Not necessarily true. Better to say a person will never be an adult until he/she developed an adult relationship with their parents (which means contributing to the overall family economy as an equal, and being viewed by the parents as an equal adult rather than merely a child).
The combination of posts by the OP make for a very unusual situation. It sounds like the OP is the guy making 36k. Combined with the other thread, his game plan is to continue living at home until is mother and aunt (in their 60's) die.
He's an only child and it sounds like his game plan is to live off his mother(paying minimal rent and occasionally doing laundry and cooking) until he can take over her house and just live on that.
Yet somehow he has dreams of having out with the people in the top 5%?
In February this year, I decided to turn that around and have saved on average of $2500 every month since then. Once I pay off a couple debts in 2015, I'll be saving on average nearly $4000 every month. I am still living pretty comfortably, just making better decisions on BIG purchases.

If you are not making $200K+ then how can you say you have been making $100K+ for "several" years if you've only been with your GF for less than 3 years and made less than half of what you make now when you met her?

I am 26 and work in the industrial /construction field and make the same as our engineer. Much of our income is tax free incentives but it's all the equivalent of about 150k-160k.
Assuming he found her before they started dating and a little bit of rounding, it can still all add up. Also "Several" is a very vague word.

Lol, I understand the snarkiness, at least you were relatively tactful. Let me give you further detail to ease your questions.
I started dating my gf in March of 2012 and was making around 50-60k. In May (right after turning 24) of that year I left for a job as a contractor in which I made $40/hr and 630/wk per diem (per diem is tax free btw). I worked 50-70 hrs/wk (straight pay, 1099 contractor) so I was making about $2630-$3400/wk before taxes (I rarely worked 50 hrs, usually 60-70). So technically in 2012-2014 I have made over 100,000 for the year.
Now I am salary, still receive per diem, truck allowance, benefits, vacation, gas card, etc. (I travel and do new construction jobs that last around 6-12+ months around the country) and my income is comparable to about 160k. I had one contract job for about 4 months that was comparable to 189k.. My current job position is permanent with this company traveling on their projects and as long as I want it pretty much, so I'm comfortable making a bit less for great experience and better security...
I feel the first guy will be wealthier overall in the end.
It depends on end results. Fixed assets at times is worth more than low gaining investments. Its why at one time a home was best investment a typical homeowner could make. Now its those with cash buying those low priced assets for cash that didn't workout as investment for others. In 2008 crash I believe retail investors loss something near 30% average value.
