typically on investing forums folks brag about their great stock picks and how much they are up and they either had little money invested in the stock and the rest of their money was idle or they just didn't have enough money to amount to much invested.

the game of growing assets get very different dollar wise vs percentage wise as you get more and more.

a mere 7% drop in the value of my portfolio today wipes away almost 12 years of maxing out my 401k AT THE CATCH UP AMOUNT.

In dollar terms the amounts up or down can be mind blowing as your assets grow

Up. Doubled my income, got health insurance and other benefits, and paid off all debt but my vehicle. I was sinking in 2013.

In reality most of the doubles are occurring on smaller amounts of money not 7 figure + sums

I don't have the December results in as yet but our investment portfolio is probably up in the 8% range. Neither have I bothered to try to put a value on our real estate because nothing is for sale. But fairly sure that we are looking at a decent raise in value.

Just figured it out last night. Our net worth increased about 11% from 12/31/13 to 12/31/14. It breaks out as about 3% from new savings and 8% as growth in our investments.

I agree. The % move is more important than the dollar amount.

Sure, it's impressive to go from $800K to $1M (20%) but the person who went from $80K to $100K still had to make the right decisions to get the 20%.

Up, thankfully. Our income is down, since we're retired, but we finally got our nut into a good management company and the stock market has been healthy this year. We wish we'd done it sooner. Also, the house we bought 4 years ago is finally back to what we paid for it, so we look forward to some real estate gain this year.
