So they will get a bad reputation when the homeowner goes to the media, and potentially lose hundreds or thousands of customers, rather than forgoing one cent?
What amount would you consider to be within the realm of reasonable to avoid such negative press? If you and a bank agree to a specified amount that is on a contract then you are obligated to pay them such amount otherwise they have the option to foreclose. Sure it would suck to lose your house over a penny but in reality to be foreclosed on for a penny would require you to basically not be paying attention and/or dead. I don't know anyone who wouldn't pay a penny to get their deed.
I'm not sure about a bank, but I once accidentally paid 1 cent less on my electric bill, and they sent me a disconnection notice (ie: pay your balance or we will disconnect). I also once overpaid (different electric company), and they sent me a check for 7 cents. I didn't take the time to cash it.
