This kind of question is most easily answered by the bank itself. If there are branches in both places, I'm sure they can coordinate getting you both on one account. Go ask.
Personally I would never start something this important online.
So important as a joint bank account? Uh okay it's done all day everyday and with people in two location it makes far more sense than trying to do it in person
You don't need a joint account if you have online banking. Chances are the bank or Credit Union can link your accounts so you can transfer funds back and forth. Give them a call and they can probably just link it over the phone. They will need permission from both of you probably.
If you can both walk into the bank together and present legal ID, it takes no more than five minutes.
If you can't go in together, and you are both legal residents of the USA, it can be done with copies of ID documents -- the banks are hapy enough to have you as customers, but are concerned about compliance with the Patriot Act's folksy "Know Your Customer" rules, which presume you are a terrorists until you prove you are not. Just ask your bank what documents they need to see.

I said "personally" I do not care what others do, it is their choice hence the reason I said "personally"......
Since it is obviously my choice to not do that and I stated it is my choice why in the world are you questioning my choice for my life and trying to "correct" me?
Do you really know what is oh so much better in someone else's life than they know themselves?
Edited to add: Everything that has been suggested by others in regards to copies of ID Documents, doing things online, making a phone call does not happen at the bank we use.
Any changes have to be done in person, inside the bank because they do not allow "electronic" signatures. It is protects them as well as us since we all know each other and they do still check our ID because it is policy.
