I have ambitious parents, they forced me to study hard in high school. I did, got a scholarship, went to college, got 2 internships while there, graduated, started work full time, make significantly more than minimum wage.

I've never made minimum wage. Even when I was 15 and working as a bag boy and cart pusher, I made $5.90 an hour when the federal minimum wage was $5.15. While still in high school, my next job was $7.00 an hour, then back to $5.90 (another job).

In college I was at $7.65 for a bit, then one job that was straight commission (about $12-15 an hour), then $8.00, then $10.75, and finished at $12.xx.

Then graduate school... worked as a law clerk for $15, and then $25 an hour.

Now making a salary, so...

Worked minimum wage at KFC during high school and my first run at college (didn't take), joined military, went back to college, worked at an electrical shop, also worked for a company that repaired the pumps in sewage pits (a crappy job!), got a degree, found a career with the degree.

Minimum wage is a starting point, if you need to actually make a living wage it takes a bit more effort. I work in a facility with people who are content to work from 7:00am-3:30pm day in, day out. They make a bit more than minimum wage, but with a bit of effort and some FREE training on their own time they can make more. The majority will not put in the extra time, even if it means $8.00 more an hour... It's easier to go home and watch tv

My brother, who barely graduated high school, took every class he could and ended up making a good wage for our area.

Luck favors the prepared, Good luck! Rg

I worked minimum wage for 2 years in 2007 and 2008. Then I applied to entry level jobs that paid more. I kept looking for better entry level jobs and I found them. The key to finding any job is the numbers game and selling yourself for the position. Now I make a great salary and I've never went to college. I have a great 2nd job that I love that again pays way more than minimum wage. It's all in what you want to do. For instance, if you like hard work anyone can get a warehouse job that pays $14-$17 starting and $16-22+ after a year or two. Of course that isn't a career, and I wouldn't want to do it, but many also don't. That's why the pay is high.

Best of luck in your career aspirations.

I haven't worked for minimum wage since.... oh wait. I've never worked for minimum wage.

It always made more sense to me to be qualified to earn more than that, and to be a good worker so my employer wanted to keep me.

Setting the bar extremely low, aren't we? I made minimum wage for about 2 months when I started my first job at 16. They gave me a raise then a promotion another 2 months after that. My advice to you is to apply elsewhere if you are only making minimum wage at 21 years old. You "should" have been in the working world for at least 3 years now which means you should be making significantly more than minimum wage by now.

Also, set your goals high. If your goal is to not make minimum wage then why in the world are you even setting that goal? That's like someone setting a goal to learn how to read... it really should be an expectation, not a goal.

I made minimum wage for 1 month when I was 16 years old, then got a raise. Learned everything I could about that fast food place and got promoted to supervisor. Used that experience towards a professional job when I graduated college. Now I own my own business.

Be the best employee, get to work early, work the whole time you're there, learn as much as you can about the whole department/company, be easy to work with, respectful to your boss, charming to customers.

Best of luck!

way to go I have the exact opposite when it comes to parents they're ok with living a mediocre life. I am not.
They didn't push me to go to college so i had to find out on my own if you don't go to college you will have a minimum wage job pretty much your whole life so now that i've had this epiphany i am attempting to go back to school to get a higher education! Wish me luck!
