If your folks won't let you live rent-free there, perhaps you can find a place to rent near work and bike or take a bus? This would free up a good amount of money each month that might help you bridge the financial gap. How often do your folks need you to be there physically, and how far from work is it?

I'm planning to rent near work to alleviate transportation costs, such as not buying a car since I will be living there remporarily

OK then, I think you can make it work - you just need to deal with the negative car equity however you choose. I can't imagine rent in SE Asia is much more than your current car payment unless it's downtown of a big city.

ETA: I hope when you compare salaries you account for the potential of double taxation when earning income outside the US. Maybe it still makes sense to stay, but without details I can't say.

Don't worry about the debt you leave behind; it will be here waiting for you upon your return. It will rear it's ugly head the second to you try and rent, buy or lease anything on US soil.

Pay your debt beforehand and if you can't, you need to make sure you're making payments while out of the country. It's not hard to do. I do it all the time.

Sell anything you won't be taking to Asia. Use that cash to pay off your US debt and worry about replacing it when the time comes. Two years will go by fast, but that unpaid debt will sit here and fester and you'll regret not taking care of it before you left.

Yes, you can file bankruptcy but that's a cop out. Pay your debt.

I agree with those that have suggested liquidating all belongings to satisfy all debts before you leave. The few thousand dollars in debt is not worth the inability to return to the USA and function normally.

Start outlining what you own that is worth anything. Television, couch, everything really.
