I knew the kneejerk response would be Go open a bank account. (sigh)
As a poor person - at least I have a checking account - I'm renting a room and have zero utilities in my name.
I did have internet service in my name at my last room but all utilities are included here.
When a knee jerk response keeps 10% of your income in your pocket it's a pretty good response.
I don't frequent check cashing places, I've had a checking account since I was 17, but I once was in a situation where I only had a spare check and a $100 bill and the store I was at would take neither. But there was a check cashing place next door and they wanted a check for $16.50 to get $15.00 in cash. It was worth $1.50 to me in that situation, but take a years worth of income @ $10/hr and we are talking $2,000 in fees on a paltry $20,000 income, that is huge.
I'm sure the fees vary, but still it's the poor who can least afford to be unbanked (and that's not getting into the cost of capital of pawn shops, payday loan places, title loans, and the stresses of living paycheck to paycheck).
So get that checking account, make it right with the bank.
As other said. Have a friend cash it for you or just GIVE it to someone who looks like they could use it. Consider it a good deed for the day. Please do NOT pitch it in the trash.
that too ? i always find it funny how it is rarely just an issue being an isolated event .
there usually is a history of bad decisions and poor choices over a life time right behind it .
You got that right Math! Way to many people these days live irresponsibly and continue to compound their problems with one poor decision after another, and then run around blaming everyone else and yelling "no fair" or "don't judge me". Way to many people seem to know what their "rights" are, but know NOTHING of responsibility!!
Go to the bank that issue the check and cash it there. For example if it was issue by Bank of America, go to any branch of Bank of America.
This may not be possible. It could have been issued by an out of state bank, and sometimes the bank that issued the check will charge to cash it, if the person doesn't have an account with them.

If possible or perhaps find somebody who has a checking account and make the check payable to him. Go with him in person, ask the bank. I'm sure there are ways.
I just cash a check for .19cents, I didn't think it was possible, but I didn't take the risk to deposit it either.
I just am curious as to what class action lawsuit paid off so generously....
